Los Angeles Avengers News Release
LOS ANGELES -- Former Oakland Raider and University of Michigan quarterback, Scott Dreisbach has signed with the Los Angeles Avengers of the Arena Football League, head coach Ed Hodgkiss announced today.
Dreisbach (6-foot-3, 210 pounds) is expected to take over as the backup to starter Tony Graziani. Ryan Helming, who served as the No. 2 Avenger quarterback for the first five games of the 2003, underwent surgery to repair a fracture in his right foot on Wednesday (March 5) and has been placed on the injured reserve list.
"Scott is a very good athlete, who can run around back there which is kind of a bonus for us and something you don't always need in the AFL, but he also has the ability to stay in the pocket and make all the throws," said Hodgkiss, who is in his second year at the helm of the Avengers. "I feel confident that he could step in there with a scaled down game plan and get the job done."
Dreisbach has four years of NFL experience, primarily as a third-team quarterback with the Oakland Raiders (1999-2000) and Detroit Lions (2001-02). Between seasons with the Lions, he played for the Scottish Claymores of NFL Europe in 2002.
A four-year letterman at Michigan, Dreisbach was a member of the 1997 Wolverine team that beat Washington State in the 1998 Rose Bowl to win the national championship. He played in 28 games at Michigan, completing 54.7 percent of his passes for 2,920 yards and 15 touchdowns. In Dreisbach's first game with the Wolverines in 1995, he set a pair of school records, attempting 52 passes while throwing for 372 yards against Virginia. In 1996, he started 11 games and became just the fourth quarterback in Michigan history to pass for over 2,000 yards in a single season.
While playing in Ann Arbor, Dreisbach was a collegiate teammate of Avenger kicker Remy Hamilton and wide receiver/defensive back Russell Shaw.
Dreisbach was born in Mishawaka, Ind., on Dec. 16, 1975. His grandfather, Ed Ehlers, was a professional basketball (Boston Celtics) and baseball (New York Yankees and Chicago Cubs) player. Dreisbach's uncle, Tom Ehlers, played in the NFL from 1975-81 with the Buffalo Bills and Philadelphia Eagles.
The Avengers (3-2) play their next game on Sunday, March 9, versus the New York Dragons at the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, N.Y. The game kicks off at 9 a.m. (Pacific) and will be broadcast live on XTRA Sports 690 & 1150.
