AFL I Arena Football League (1987-2008)

Kelly, Garcia Race for 500 Touchdowns

March 6, 2003 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I) News Release

THE RACE FOR 500: AFL's career passing TD leader, Detroit quarterback ANDY KELLY, is 14 touchdowns shy of becoming the AFL's first quarterback in history to reach 500 career. With his seven-touchdown performance last Sunday, New York's AARON GARCIA (480) moved to within 20 TDs of 500. Kelly became the first quarterback to surpass 25,000 passing yards last week in Detroit's loss at Tampa Bay (25,182) and remains atop that list. Garcia (24,183), Arizona's SHERDRICK BONNER (23,817) and Las Vegas' TODD HAMMEL (23,626) are the nearest active quarterbacks to 25,000 career passing yards.

FOURTH DOWN? PIECE OF CAKE: The do or die implications on fourth down have been mastered by Tampa Bay Storm quarterback JOHN KALEO and Dallas Desperados signal-caller JIM KUBIAK. Kaleo has completed three passes on fourth down this season – all resulting in touchdowns, while Kubiak has completed all of his fourth-down attempts (4), all resulting in a first down.

SABER ZONE: The San Jose SaberCats have a scent for the red zone. In fact some might re-name it the "Saber zone". This season San Jose is 19 for 19 on scoring opportunities inside the red zone resulting in 16 TDs, 3 FGs and 107 points.

FIVE ALIVE: The Orlando Predators are off to a 5-0 run this season and are in prime position for an ArenaBowl crown. The three previous ArenaBowl champions (San Jose '02, Grand Rapids '01, Orlando '00) were also victorious in their first five contests. The only other 5-0 team in AFL history was the 1996 Tampa Bay Storm, who won their first five en route to winning ArenaBowl X.

COMPETITIVE GAMES: Through the first five weeks of the season, the AFL continues to be as exciting and competitive as ever. Heading into Week 6, 14 of the 16 teams are within two games of their respective division lead. In addition, 60 percent of AFL games have been decided by eight points or less, a 15-percent increase compared to the first five weeks of 2002 and a 13-percent increase vs. 2002's final season results. In addition, 30-percent of games have been decided by three points or less, up seven percent vs. the first five weeks of 2002 and a nine-percent increase vs. 2002's final results.

DUDE...TAMPA'S GOT A DELL! Tampa Bay Storm wide receiver CLIF DELL has given quarterback JOHN KALEO 10 good reasons – and counting – to throw to him. Last week marked the 10th consecutive game in which Dell tallied a touchdown. The streak dates back to Week 10 of the 2002 season when he played with Orlando.

MOVIN' ON UP: Chicago DS CEDRIC WALKER is 10.5 tackles away from 450.0 career tackles. There have been only three players in league history to reach the 450-tackle mark. Walker is sitting in fifth place in AFL history with 439.5 tackles. In fourth place is Las Vegas' DAMON MASON at 449.5 stops. Walker led the league with 98.0 tackles last year. It was the second time in his career that he led the league in that category (93.0 in 1997). Walker has seven career games with over 10.0 tackles, including a career high of 13.0 tackles (April 26, 2002, at Orlando and July 13, 2002, vs. Dallas).
