NEW YORK - March 6, 2003 - NBC Sports features split regional coverage of the Arena Football League on Sunday beginning at noon ET with Los Angeles facing New York at Nassau Coliseum. During NBC's five-week coverage of the PGA Tour's "Southern Swing," which tees off this weekend with the Ford Championship at Doral on Saturday and Sunday at 3 p.m. ET, the AFL on NBC will move to noon ET each Sunday. On the west coast, live regional coverage of the AFL will begin following the conclusion of PGA Tour coverage at 3 p.m. PT. The weekend of The Players Championship (March 29-30) there will be no AFL games broadcast on NBC.
Other games for Week 6 include regional coverage of Grand Rapids at Georgia at noon ET and in the Pacific time zone following the conclusion of the Doral coverage, San Jose will face Chicago at 3 p.m. PT.
LOS ANGELES (3-2) @ NEW YORK (0-5)
It's an East meets West match-up when Los Angeles faces New York and quarterback Aaron Garcia, who holds the best touchdown-interception ratio (36-2) and completion percentage (68.3) among AFL passers this season. Garcia remains on pace to throw for more than 5,300 yards and 115 touchdowns this season. For Los Angeles, the scoring-tandem of Chris Jackson and Greg Hopkins, assisted by quarterback Tony Graziani, continues to produce solid numbers, accounting for 48-percent of their team's scoring output (136 points). Tom Hammond (play-by-play), Pat Haden (analyst) and Lewis Johnson (reporter) will handle the broadcast.
SAN JOSE (3-2) @ CHICAGO (2-3)
San Jose is currently tied atop the Western Division standings and have put up at least 70 points in three games this season, including the last two games. San Jose Head Coach Darren Arbet holds the league's top scoring offense (64.4 PPG) while also leading in turnover ratio. Across the field, Chicago head coach Mike Hohensee has the AFL's top scoring defense that allowed only 37.4 ppg (No. 1 in AFL) and 221.6 ypg (No. 2 in AFL). Mike Breen (play-by-play), Ray Bentley (analyst) and Marty Snider (reporter) have the call.
GRAND RAPIDS (4-1) @ GEORGIA (3-2)
The Rampage not only bring the No. 2-ranked scoring offense to Georgia when they face the league's top defense on Sunday, but also carry the second-best record in the league. Grand Rapids posts more than 60 points per game and is led by one of the AFL's elite quarterbacks, Clint Dolezel, who ranks fourth on the career passing touchdowns list. Georgia's stingy defense, guided by defensive specialist Kevin Gaines (4 interceptions, 8 pass breakups) and WR/DB Jarrick Hillery, continues to halt their opponents' offensive efforts. Eli Gold (play-by-play) and Charles Davis (analyst) will broadcast the game.
