Firebirds Sign Cogell, Trade Hoad to Avengers

INDIANAPOLIS - The Indiana Firebirds announced today that have signed free agent FB/LB Jeff Cogell to their roster, while also completing a trade that sent rookie OS Ryan Hoag to the Los Angeles Avengers for future considerations. Cogell has joined the rest of the team, now midway through training camp, and will be suited up next Monday when the Firebirds go to Detroit for a scrimmage with the Grand Rapids Rampage.
Cogell (6'2, 260) returns to the AFL after having spent the past two seasons in arenafootball2 with the Mohegan Wolves. In 1998 Cogell was signed by the New York CityHawks (AFL) and recorded 1.5 tackles in two games. He was signed by the Florida Bobcats in 1999, but did not see any game action.
Returning to arena football in 2002, Cogell was named the af2 'Built Ford Tough Man of the Year", playing in 16 games and leading the Wolves in sacks (7.5) and tackles for loss (8). Firebirds FB/LB Leroy Thompson won the same award at the AFL level that season. Last season, playing for Indiana assistant head coach Mark Stoute, Cogell saw action in 14 games, accumulating 24.0 tackles (2.5 for loss), 3.5 sacks, three fumble recoveries and one forced fumble.
At American International College (Springfield, MA), he played for three seasons totaling 294 tackles (30 games) including 42 for losses and 24 sacks. He was named a second team All-American in 1994, while gaining Daktronics Division II All-Northeast Region First Team accolades in 1995.
The team also announced a trade that sent rookie OS Ryan Hoag (Gustavus Adolphus) to the Los Angeles Avengers in exchange for future considerations. Hoag was a seventh-round selection by the Oakland Raisers in the 2003 NFL Draft. He most recently was on the roster with the New York Giants, until his contract expired prior to Hoag joining the Firebirds in training camp.
