
Firebirds Conclude Regular Season on Saturday Night vs Sting

FLINT, Mich. - The 2023-24 regular season ends tonight in Flint for the Firebirds and the visiting Sarnia Sting. The Bees are outside the playoffs and enjoying the role of spoiler. The Birds are guaranteed at least the eighth position but could still assume the seventh spot currently held by Owen Sound. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Dort Financial Center.
LAST TIME OUT: The Birds traveled north to Sault Ste. Marie on Friday night where they fell in an early 3-0 hole. Oliver Peer scored and assisted on a Tristan Bertucci goal to bring the Birds back within one but netminder Charlie Schenkel proved unsolvable in the final minutes before an empty-netter cemented a 4-2 Hounds victory. Jacob Brown made 19 saves on 22 shots in the effort.
SERIES HISTORY: Flint's all-time record versus Sarnia stands at 35-25-3-0 and the Sting are the club that the Firebirds have the most wins against in their franchise history. Their record stands at 19-11-1-0 at the Dort Financial Center when facing the Bees. Despite a 4-2-1-0 mark in the series this season, Flint is only 1-2-0-0 on home ice.
SCOUTING THE STING: (24-39-3-1, 4th West Division) -
Overage winger Marko Sikic leads the Bees on the scoresheet this season with 17 goals and 38 assists for 55 total points. Sophomore forward Tyson Doucette ranks second with 46 points from a balanced 23 tallies and 23 helpers. Northville, Mich. native Zach Filak has lit the lamp 22 times and chipped in 16 assists for 38 points to sit third.
Between the pipes, Nick Surzycia has 15 wins through 51 appearances. He carries a 4.06 goals-against average with an .871 save percentage. Rookie Karsen Chartier has seven wins through 24 appearances and sports a 4.55 GAA with an .846 SV%.
The Sting's power play ranks 16th in the OHL with a 17.5% conversion rate. Their penalty kill is 19th, getting the job done 71.2% of the time.
SCOUTING THE FIREBIRDS: (30-32-4-1, 3rd West Division):
Oliver Peer is concluding his final regular season in the OHL at the top of the stats for the Birds. Coming into Saturday's tilt, he has 80 points (37 G, 43 A). In the 29 games he's been a member of the Firebirds, Peer has logged 15 goals plus 18 assists for 33 points, including seven multi-point tilts. Fellow overager Nolan Dann holds down second with 28 tallies and 36 helpers for 64 points. Anaheim Ducks prospect Coulson Pitre is third with 55 points from 27 goals and 28 assists.
Nathan Day has appeared in 53 games this season and earned 25 victories. He carries a 3.76 goals-against average and an .867 save percentage. Jacob Brown has five wins through 18 appearances and rides a 4.19 GAA and an .853 SV%.
Flint's power play ranks 17th in the league with a conversion rate of 16.9%. The penalty kill is successful 78.4% of the time, ranking 12th.
