Sault Ste. Marie, Ont - Two goals including one on the power-play by the Greyhounds' Gabe Guertier earned a 4-3 victory over the Firebirds on Wednesday night in front of nearly 4,000 fans at the Essar Centre.
With just 2.5 seconds remaining in the opening period, Bobby MacIntyre found Guertier backdoor who converted past Flint's Zack Bowman to give the Soo a one-goal lead headed into the first intermission.
Just 12 seconds into the middle frame, the Firebirds flipped the puck towards the Greyhounds net before Flint's Connor Chatham capitalized on a Brandon Halverson error tying the game 1-1.
Ryan Moore would give the Firebirds the lead at 7:29 after a 2-on-1 with Vince Scognamiglio was poked toward the left-wing corner. Then, Moore centered the puck off Halverson's pads from below the goal line and into the net to give Flint the 2-1 advantage.
29 seconds later, Colton White received his own rebound from the right circle, skated behind the net and fed Zach Senyshyn who scored from the bottom of the left-wing circle at 7:58 to tie the game 2-2.
The Greyhounds would take the lead 1:42 later from the same spot when MacIntyre fired the puck on net, picking up the rebound of Bowman's right pad and roofing the puck short side top shelf.
Flint would tie the game mid-way through the third period when Cullen Mercer entered the Soo's zone skating up the right-wing. Mercer found Connor Sills in the high slot. Sills was taken down before getting back up, finding the puck through traffic and getting two shots on net and eventually burying even the contest 3-3.
With 3:18 remaining in the game, the Greyhounds' Jack Kopacka fired the puck off the right post on the power-play where Guertier was on the door-step to send home the game winner.
Flint lead in shots 32-29 after the three periods. The Firebirds were 0/4 on the power-play while the Greyhounds were 1/5. Connor Sills was named the game's third star.
The Firebirds return home to the Dort Federal Event Center this Saturday night, Oct. 10 against the Sarnia Sting. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and all fans in attendance will receive a free magnet schedule. Flint will then host the Peterborough Petes on Sunday, Oct. 11 at 5 p.m.
