FireAntz Win Streak Snapped at Nine

[Fayetteville, N.C.]-- The Fayetteville FireAntz of the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) extended their SPHL-high winning streak to nine games before finally dropping one in Asheville on Saturday. The club's record for the season now stands at 25 wins and 17 losses (2nd), and have 14 wins in their last 17 games.

Thursday February 10th (at Knoxville): The FireAntz went into Knoxville riding a 4-game win streak against the SPHL-leading Ice Bears.

The FireAntz scored early and often as Jeff Coulter started things off for the team and himself at 4:50. George Nistas netted another at 13:11, extending the lead to 2-0.

In the second period Steve Roberts tallied the only goal of the period at 7:11.

Third period goals by Coulter (2 in the 3rd period, 3 for the game) and Roberts (2nd of the game, 31st of the season) provided the final scoring on the night, in the FireAntz 6-0 shutout. Chad Collins was spectacular in net for the FireAntz, turning aside all 44 shots that he faced, earning his 4th shutout of the season.

Knoxville outshot the FireAntz 44-36.

Friday February 11th (at Huntsville): The FireAntz traveled to Huntsville to take on the Havoc for the second time in four days. Fayetteville defeated Huntsville 6-2 on Tuesday.

The FireAntz got off to a fast start again as George Nistas (18th) scored just 3:32 into the contest. Kory Baker (12th) followed just 13 seconds later to give the FireAntz a 2-0 lead. Huntsville's James Patterson answered with one of his own at 6:32 on the power play. The FireAntz, however, would tack on another by Baker (2nd, 13th) at 12:59 to give the FireAntz a 3-1 lead going to the 2nd period.

The FireAntz would take a 5-1 lead on goals by Josh Welter (6th) and Mark Phenow (6th.) Huntsville's Doug Merrell would draw the Havoc closer at 5-2 before the period would be done.

Goals by Brandon Doria and Mke Degurse got Huntsville within reach at 5-4. But Nistas (19th) added the insurance goal, which would be the final tally, at 15:13. FireAntz goaltender Chad Collins, who earned the win, twisted his knee and was replaced by Glen Ridler with 5 minutes remaining in the 3rd period. Collins is expected to be ready to play for the FireAntz home game on February 18th against the Asheville Aces.

Huntsville outshot the FireAntz 48-30.

Saturday February 12th (at Asheville): The FireAntz played their fourth game in five nights on Saturday in Asheville. The Aces are the only team in the SPHL that had a record over .500 against the FireAntz. Asheville came into the game 3-2 versus the FireAntz on the season.

The FireAntz were skating on tired legs and it showed. The 7th place Aces came out flying, netting three 1st period goals, by Peter Bournazakis, Jarno Mensonen, and Joel Petkoff. The only FireAntz goal of the period, and the game, was scored by Chad Peck (10th.)

In the second period the Aces continued to find the net, tallying three more goals. Eldon Cheechoo, Bournazakis (2nd), and Brett Roat all scored giving the Aces the 6-1 victory. The loss for the FireAntz ended their 9-game win streak.

The FireAntz outshot Asheville 36-35.

Chad Collins is 1st in the SPHL with 21 wins, a 2.35 GAA, a .927 sv%, and 4 shutouts.
