Winston-Salem Polar Twins News Release
With Jomar Cruz, Justin Kot, and Geoff Rollins returning to the Polar Twins lineup this weekend, the team was ready to nab a few wins on the road. In the end, however, the Cottonmouths and Barracudas proved to be more than the Polar Twins could take as Winston-Salem dropped both games over the weekend.
Friday, February 11 at Columbus: Ryan Rutz scored two goals to lead the Columbus Cottonmouths to a 7-1 victory over the Winston-Salem Polar Twins Friday night at Columbus Civic Center.
The Polar Twins came out flat in the first period, allowing three goals and unable to pose much of an offensive threat.
Lorne Misita got things started for the Snakes at the 4:43 mark of the first. After faking the shot from the right wing face off circle to get Jomar Cruz to go down on his knees, Misita took a step into the slot and wristed a shot high over the glove of Cruz for the 1-0 Columbus lead.
Rutz made it a two-goal Cottonmouths lead less than two minutes later, getting the feed from Orrin Hergott on a two-on-one breakaway for his 15th goal of the season.
The Snakes pulled out to the 3-0 lead at 15:01 of the first with his third power play goal of the season. Cruz made the first save but lost sight of the puck, which bounced out in front to Pullman who was pinching in from the point.
Rhett Dudley managed one for the Twins late in the period, wristing a shot that deflected off of Terry Friesen's glove and into the net for Dudley's sixth goal of the season.
The Cottonmouths added to their lead in the middle frame, getting goals from Craig Stahl and Tim Green to make it 5-1 at the end of two periods of play.
In the third period it was more of the Snakes as Rutz tallied his second goal of the game and Hergott added one more to lift the Cottonmouths to the 7-1 final.
Winston-Salem was out shot 26-36 in the game and was unable to convert on three power play opportunities while allowing one power play goal in three opportunities for the Snakes.
Saturday, February 12 at Jacksonville: Tyler Nilsson stopped all 16 shots he faced to lead the Jacksonville Barracudas to a 4-0 shutout over the Winston-Salem Polar Twins at Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena Saturday night. Jason Silverthorn tallied a goal and an assist in the win.
Colin Kendall gave the âCudas all the scoring they would need only 2:27 into the game with his sixth goal of the season.
Silverthorn, Shawn Roed, and Brad Federenko had the other goals for the Barracudas, who won their fifth game of the season over the Polar Twins.
Rick Nichol stopped 34 of 38 shots for Winston-Salem but was unable to come up with the victory between the pipes.
