FireAntz Hot Streak Continues

[Fayetteville, N.C.]-- The Fayetteville FireAntz of the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) continued their winning ways this weekend sweeping three games in three nights. That brings their record to 20 wins and 16 losses (T-2nd), and have 9 wins in their last 11 games (the only losses were in overtime.)

Friday January 28th (at Asheville): The FireAntz traveled to Asheville to take on the Aces in a matchup between two teams going in opposite directions in the standings.

Mark Phenow (4th) got things rolling for the FireAntz, netting the only goal of the first period, on the power play at 13:13. The assists on the play went to Sean Edwards and George Nistas.

In the second period the FireAntz tacked one on to their lead as Edwards (7th) tallied just 2:49 in to give the club a 2-0 lead. Former FireAnt Brett Roat cut the lead in half at the 8:31 mark of the second. But that's as close as the Aces would get.

In the third period Tyler Perry would find the back of the net twice (14, 15) to give the FireAntz the 4-1 victory.

The FireAntz outshot the Aces 44-26.

Saturday January 29th (at Columbus): The FireAntz found themselves on the road again, this time in Columbus to take on the Cottonmouths.

For the second consecutive night, Mark Phenow (5th) started the scoring on the power play for the FireAntz, just 3:02 into the game. In what would be a theme for the night, the FireAntz again tallied on the power play at the 18:26 mark, this time by Tyler Perry (16th.) The FireAntz would take a 2-0 advantage to the second period.

In the second period the FireAntz added on to their lead at the 10:16 mark when Chad Peck (1st of the game, 5th of the season) beat Chad Rycroft to make the score 3-0. Tylor Keller pulled the Cottonmouths within 2 at 15:18 scoring a power play goal.

With a 3-1 lead Peck provided the final tally at 6:17 on the power play. The FireAntz were 3-9 on the power play for the game.

The FireAntz outshot Columbus 33-31.

FireAntz 19-16 on the season, (2-3 vs. Columbus.)

Sunday January 30th (vs. Knoxville): The FireAntz returned home to take on the 1st place Knoxville Ice Bears for the second straight Sunday at the Crown Coliseum. The matchup pitted the top two goaltenders in the SPHL, Chad Collins of the FireAntz and Terry Dunbar of the Ice Bears, each with a 2.32 goals against average.

In what would be a great back and forth battle the FireAntz took the early advantage on a goal by Chad Peck (7th) just 1:05 into the game. Knoxville's David Bagley answered back at 10:10 with a deflection of a shot by Curtis Menzul that just squeaked by Collins.

In the second period Bagley (2nd, 20th) gave the Ice Bears the edge on the power play, 2-1. Then at 9:05 Nick Kormanyos (7th) took a great feed from Kory Baker and wristed one past Dunbar to tie the game at 2. Knoxville regained the lead at 11:30 on a power play goal by Marcus Forsberg. The FireAntz tied the game at 3 when Sean Edwards (8th) deflected a shot from the point by Baker on the power play at 17:13.

With the game tied 3-3 in the third and the FireAntz on the power play Knoxville's Kevin Swider took a pass from Darren Cain on a two-on-one and roofed it over a sliding Collins to give the Ice Bears a 4-3 lead at the 3:21 mark. At 4:55 the FireAntz knotted the game at 4 on a nifty move by George Nistas (14th) that just beat Dunbar. At 11:46 Baker skated along the left wing boards and after beating three defenders slipping it past Dunbar and just across the goal line to give the FireAntz a 5-4 advantage. After turning aside a late flurry by the Ice Bears, Collins and the FireAntz held on for the hard fought victory.

The FireAntz outshot Knoxville 45-31.

The FireAntz next home games are Friday, February 4th versus the Columbus Cottonmouths and Tuesday, February 8th against the Huntsville Havoc on "Rock 103.‘$5' Tuesday with the FireAntz."
