[FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.] - The Fayetteville FireAntz of the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) had a season that ended with the team qualifying for the playoffs, in 4th place. Over the course of the season, several team records fell. Records for the career goals, assists, and penalty minutes all are now owned by members of the 2005-06 club.
George Nistas, who tallied 32 goals this season, tied for the team lead with Dean Jackson, now holds the FireAntz all-time goals lead with 52. He surpassed Matt Kohansky, who played with the FireAntz from 2002-04. Jackson, now with nine game-winning goals in his time with the club, sits atop that list. Ryan Kiley, who played from 2002-04 had seven.
Kory Baker set some records of his own, breaking the FireAntz all-time assists record and moving into second on the points list. Baker has 79 assists and 109 points.
Mike Fournier, the team's captain for the last two seasons, is now the all-time FireAntz leader in penalty minutes with 591. Aaron Shrieves, a former captain of the club, played from 2002-04 and accumulated 585 penalty minutes. Fournier also extended his own record for games played for the franchise, now having played in 160 games.
Mike Clarke, with his 67 points this year, is now the single season and career leader for points among defensemen. Clarke had nine goals and 58 assists.
Chad Collins, who rejoined the FireAntz late this season from the ECHL, is the record holder among FireAntz goaltenders with 33 wins, 6 shutouts, a 2.28 goals against average, and a .928 save percentage.
The FireAntz set one major team record of its' own. The club, for the first time in franchise history, had over 100,000 fans attend their games. In 28 home dates, the FireAntz drew 103,179 fans to the Crown Coliseum in Fayetteville, an average of 3,684 per game.
The FireAntz quest for the President's Cup begins this Friday as the FireAntz travel to Florida to take on the Seals. Their first home game of the 2005-06 playoffs is Saturday, March 25th at 7:35pm.
