State College Spikes News Release

GRANVILLE, W.Va. - Edwin Figuera and Wadye Ynfante each delivered three-hit games at the plate for the State College Spikes, but a four-run sixth-inning surge from the West Virginia Black Bears was too much to overcome as the Spikes dropped a 4-3 decision on Thursday night at Monongalia County Ballpark.

Figuera went 3-for-5 with a double from the leadoff spot in the order, recording his sixth three-hit game in a Spikes (3-4) uniform and first of the season. Ynfante reached base four times with a double, a time hit by pitch, and a stolen base to produce his first three-hit game with State College.

The Spikes took the early lead in the game when Imeldo Diaz crossed the plate on a wild pitch in the third. State College added a run in the sixth when Nick Dunn led off the frame with a triple and scored on a passed ball.

West Virginia (3-4) then took advantage of some Spikes wildness in the sixth as Zac Susi and Melvin Jiminez each drew bases-loded walks to tie the game. The Black Bears took the advantage when two runs scored on Daniel Amaral's single to right field.

The Spikes drew within a run in the eighth when Lars Nootbaar was hit by a pitch and came around to score on Dunn's single and an error, but got no closer.

State College starter Winston Nicacio (0-1) took the loss after being charged with three runs on a total of four hits and four walks over 5 1/3 innings. Nicacio struck out four batters in the effort.

Reliever Edgar Gonzalez, the sixth-round draft choice of the St. Louis Cardinals out of Fresno State in 2018, pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings and allowed three hits while recording one strikeout in his pro debut.

Black Bears starter Osvaldo Bido (1-1) picked up the win after yielding two runs on seven hits and two walks over six innings. Bido struck out four batters on the night.

Nicholas Economos (1) closed out the game with a 1-2-3 ninth inning to earn the save for West Virginia.

Friday, the Spikes and Black Bears meet for the middle game of their three-game set at Monongalia County Ballpark with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Angel Rondon (0-0), who threw seven scoreless innings for State College in his last outing, gets the ball for the Spikes.
