WATERLOO, Iowa - The Fighting Saints defensemen brought the goal-scoring to Waterloo on Saturday night, scoring all three Dubuque goals in regulation and adding the deciding goal in a shootout to give Dubuque the 4-3 win. Mike Matheson had two goals plus the shootout tally, and Matt Caito also scored as the Fighting Saints improved to 27-13-3 on the season. The victory was the Fighting Saints third consecutive win, a feat they had not accomplished since late-November.
Neither team scored in the first period, though there were quality chances for both sides. Matt Morris turned away twelve shots from his net, and Stephon Williams saved four for Waterloo. Neither team had a powerplay opportunity in the first period, and the game was scoreless as it entered its second twenty minutes.
Taylor Cammarata scored a goal from the netfront less than three minutes into the second period for Waterloo, capitalizing on a bouncing puck in the slot. Late in the frame, Zemgus Girgensons fed a puck out of the left corner to Matheson in the circle. Matheson snapped the puck home to tie the game, scoring his fifth goal of the season. Gerard Hanson picked up the secondary assist on the goal. The game remained tied at one as the two teams headed to the third period.
A quick strike from Matt Caito put the Fighting Saints in the lead early on in the third period. From along the goal line, Tyler Lundey fed the puck to Shane Sooth in the slot, who passed to Caito on the left side for the goal. Waterloo would answer back, with AJ Michaelson scoring off of a rebound chance just over seven minutes into the frame. With Dubuque on the powerplay, Matheson made a nifty move to buy time in the slot, shaking off a defender, and snapped the puck past the stick side of Williams to give the Fighting Saints the 3-2 lead. Girgensons and Max Gardiner assisted on the goal. Waterloo responded with two minutes to go, with Tony Cameranesi sending a shot through traffic and past Morris to tie the game and send it into overtime.
Neither team found the back of the net in the five-minute overtime period, though Waterloo had several scoring opportunities. In the shootout, Mike Matheson scored in the first round, lifting a puck past Williams after a move cutting across the netfront. Morris made all three saves in the shootout, securing the win for the Fighting Saints.
The Fighting Saints and Black Hawks will tangle again next Friday in Dubuque at 7:35. The Fighting Saints will host the Youngstown Phantoms the following night in a key Eastern Conference matchup.
