Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
The Dubuque Fighting Saints defeated the Waterloo Black Hawks 4-3 in a shootout Saturday at Young Arena, but the home team still picked up ground on the clubs they trail in the United States Hockey League Western Conference by virtue of the resulting OTL standings point.
Dubuque's Mike Matheson capped a big night with the only goal of the three-round shootout, beating Stephon Williams to the stick side on the first attempt for either team. However, Waterloo's determined effort to push the game beyond regulation had already drawn them closer to the Lincoln Stars and Omaha Lancers. The Hawks are third in the conference, now one point shy of Lincoln and five back from Omaha.
Tony Cameranesi forced the extra frame, stealing a clearing attempt along the right wing boards and walking through the circle to score on a low wrister with 2:17 remaining. It was the second time in the final period that Waterloo tied the score. Following Matthew Caito's goal which nudged the Saints in front during a power play 28 seconds after intermission, A.J. Michaelson beat Matt Morris with a backhander at 7:24. Matheson's second goal of the game, also on a power play with seven minutes remaining, created the tense late situation which Cameranesi resolved.
The Black Hawks had broken the ice at 2:47 of the second period. Taylor Cammarata came from behind the Saints goal to make a centering pass which appeared to glance off of a defender before going across the goal line. The lead lasted until 16:12. With Waterloo unable to take possession in their own zone, Zemgus Girgensons fed Matheson in the left wings circle, setting up a shot which squeaked through the pads of Williams.
The Hawks' next two games are on the road. Waterloo concludes their current three-in-three stretch Sunday in Des Moines against the Buccaneers at 5:05 PM. They visit the Fighting Saints for a rematch Friday.
