Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
DUBUQUE, Iowa - After a very successful stretch of games in Iowa that saw the Fighting Saints compile an 8-1-1 record in their home state and a 6-0-1 mark at the Mystique Community Ice Center, the Dubuque Fighting Saints will hop aboard their bus once more and head east to take on the Muskegon Lumberjacks and the Youngstown Phantoms. The Saints' success at and close to home has allowed Dubuque to position itself atop the USHL's Western Conference standings. The Saints will attempt to continue that dominance this weekend, as they face off against the Muskegon Lumberjacks at 6:15 CST on Friday, and pay a visit to the Youngstown Phantoms at 6:30 CST the following evening.
The scoring prowess of the Fighting Saints has continued to power the attack for Dubuque. The Saints roster includes five of the top ten point scorers in the USHL, including Zemgus Girgensons, whose nine goals lead the league, and also Vinny Saponari, whose thirteen assists are also tops in the USHL. Shane Sooth exploded for six points this past weekend to move himself into second place in the USHL in overall points scored with seventeen, trailing only Saponari and Ryan Misiak of Muskegon by just one point.
As with any successful team, offense alone has not acted alone to sustain the Fighting Saints; defense and goaltending have also been highlights for Dubuque. Both Fighting Saints goaltenders, Jackson Teichroeb and Matt Morris, allowed just one goal this past weekend in the games they played - Teichroeb defeating Chicago 7-1 and Morris besting Muskegon 4-1.
Morris' goals against average continues to be the best in the USHL at 1.47, and he is tied for
the league lead in save percentage, checking in at .943.
Both of this weekend's opponents are familiar foes for the Fighting Saints, as Dubuque has defeated both Muskegon and Youngstown by 4-1 margins in the Key City. Muskegon packs plenty of scoring power, scoring the second most goals of any team in the USHL - behind the Fighting Saints. Youngstown has struggled after getting off to a good start, losing eight of their last nine contests, with the lone victory coming in their last game against Indiana. Both games will be broadcast on Dubuque's Super Hits 106 and streamed on superhits106.com, with pregame starting a half hour prior to puck drop.
Once the Fighting Saints return home after putting nearly 1,400 miles on the odometer - their longest road trip of the season, they will play two at home during the week of Thanksgiving.
Fans are reminded of the Marine Lance Corporal Christopher Billmyer Fundraiser to take place at the game against the Chicago Steel on Wednesday, November 24th . Three dollars from each ticket sold will go to benefit the Marine from Dubuque who was wounded in Afghanistan and his family. In addition, a silent auction featuring Fighting Saints and professional sports memorabilia will be held at the game to further help the Billmyers. On Saturday, November 27th , the Saints will face off against the Indiana Ice. Saturday is Family Four Pack Night presented by the Telegraph Herald.
