Frisco Fighters News Release
WORCESTER, Mass. - The Massachusetts Pirates unfurled a title banner. At the expense of the Fighters, they also started their season off on the right foot at home Saturday night.
Kicker Josh Gable sent Frisco (0-1) packing by splitting the uprights from 33 yards out as time expired, giving the defending Indoor Football League champions a 30-27 victory.
After allowing the Pirates (1-0) only one touchdown in the first half, the Fighters watched the hosts put up points on four of their five possessions in the final half hour. Massachusetts signal-caller Alejandro Bennifield ran for a score and threw for another in the final frame.
This after Frisco came up empty on a six-minute march in the third quarter. Quarterback TJ Edwards and company started the drive on their own five-yard line, eventually moving within three yards of their opponent's end zone. Edwards was stuffed on a fourth-and-goal, but his offense was provided another try after a defensive holding call.
From the Pirates' two-yard line, backup passer Blake Sims was pulled down for a nine-yard loss on the following snap.
The Fighters held a 13-10 edge at the intermission, but Gable knotted the score with a 24-yard make about four minutes into the third period. Sims would restore a Frisco lead on a four-yard strike to LaQuvionte Gonzalez later in the stanza, but Frisco wouldn't go up again after Bennifield's scoring scamper on the next series.
Newcomer Justin Rankin found the end zone three times in the losing effort.
