Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
Wilmington, DE - The Carolina League has announced that Wilmington Blue Rocks infielder Matt Fields has been named the circuit's Topps Player of the Month for July.
In 27 July games, Fields hit .355 with 13 home runs and 19 RBIs. He scored 18 runs in the month, belted six doubles and added a triple. He recorded an on-base percentage of .425 and a slugging percentage of .794 for a 1.219 OPS. In the 23 games he played first base, he only made one error.
His slugging percentage led all of minor league baseball thanks to his MiLB-best home run total on the month. His July OPS placed third in the minors while his average ranked second in the Carolina League.
The Seattle, WA native was selected by the then-Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the 44th round of the 2004 MLB June Free Agent Draft. He spent six seasons with the Rays organization before heading to the Southern Illinois Miners of the Frontier League in 2011. He spent the first 31 games of 2012 with the Miners before his contract was purchased by the Kansas City Royals on June 22.
This is only the eighth time a Blue Rock has won the award and the first time since outfielder Brian McFall in July of 2007. Other notable Blue Rocks who have received this honor include Johnny Damon, Glendon Rusch and Carlos Beltran.
Be sure to come out to Frawley Stadium this season as we celebrate 20 years of Wilmington Blue Rocks baseball. The Blue Rocks begin a six-game homestand when they take on the Winston-Salem Dash starting on Tuesday, August 7, at 7:05 p.m. For ticket information, please call 302-888-BLUE or visit bluerocks.com.
