Lake County Fielders News Release

KENOSHA, WI - After a brief three game road trip to Kansas City, the Lake County Fielders returned to Carthage College Baseball Field to open a four game series with the Schaumburg Flyers. The Fielders dropped the opener 6-2 in a game marked by sloppy defense from both teams.

Fielders' starting pitcher John Brownell turned in a strong performance, but took the loss to fall to 1-3. He went 6 innings, allowing four runs on nine hits, while striking out a season-high eight batters, tying a Fielders franchise record.

The Flyers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on a 2nd inning home run from Terry Mermer. But the Fielders answered in the bottom of the inning when Jeff Dunbar led off with a double and scored on an error by pitcher Flyers' starter Ryan Gehring, who over threw first baseman Joey Gomes on an infield chopper by Kyle Higgins.

The Flyers took the lead for good in the top of the third with RBI singles by Richard Mercado and Terry Mermer. And Gehring made the lead hold up. He turned in 6.1 innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on seven hits, before giving way to Tom Lyons, who finished the game allowing no runs.

Also getting an RBI for the Fielders was Aaron Cone, in his first game back after three weeks on the disabled list. He knocked in Cody Strait with a grounder to third in the bottom of the fourth inning.

The Fielders and Flyers are next in action Friday, June 25 at 7:00 at Carthage College Field in Kenosha, WI. Garry Bakker will pitch for Lake County against Alain Quijano of Schaumburg.
