Schaumburg Flyers News Release
Schaumburg, IL - In the first matchup of the season, the Flyers (12-21) took down the Fielders (11-20) 6-2 at Carthage College in Kenosha, WI.
Schaumburg didn't wait long to bring the bats out. In the second inning, Terry Mermer sent a John Brownell (1-3) offering over the left field fence for his first home run as a Flyer.
After Lake County tied it up in the bottom of the frame, Travis Brown led off the third with a walk, followed by a Joey Gomes single through the left side. With a 2-4 performance Thursday night, Gomes stretched his league leading hit streak to 19 games. Richard Mercado singled to plate Brown and Mermer brought in his second run with another single to give the Flyers a 3-1 lead.
Mercado smacked a solo shot in the fifth and Schaumburg got two more in the top of the eighth to push the advantage to four.
Mermer went 2-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Mercado also had a big night with two RBI and a run.
Ryan Gehring (2-2) turned in another impressive performance in his second start of the season. The lefty went 6.1 innings, allowing just two runs on seven hits with three strikeouts on the way to his second win.
Tom Lyons came in to provide the relief, tossing 3.2 strong frames with four strikeouts to earn his first save of the year.
Schaumburg has now won four straight after sweeping Joliet.
