Schaumburg Flyers News Release

Joe Pauley doubled to left centerfield in the bottom of the ninth to give the Schaumburg Flyers (11-21) a walk-off 5-4 victory and a three game sweep over the Joliet JackHammers (14-17) Wednesday night at Alexian Field. The two teams waited out an hour and 59 minute rain delay to start the game, due to inclement weather in the area.

The JackHammers entered the ninth inning, trailing 3-2 with Josh Giles coming on out of the bullpen. Kevin Rios led off with a single and Brad Correll reached on a fielding error by shortstop, Travis Brown, to put runners at first and second with nobody out. Richard Mercado was charged on a passed ball to allow the runners to move up 90 feet each and Freddie Thon launched the next pitch to the wall in right field to put the JackHammers up 4-3. Joliet put runners at second and third with one out, only to see Cody Evans (1-3) come on and strike out Rafael Mendez and Roberto Mena to end the threat.

Schaumburg provided a rally of their own in the bottom half against Drew Shetrone (0-3). Chris Schultz was hit by a 1-2 pitch and moved up to second on a single by pinch-hitter, Joe Nowicki, after Terry Mermer struck out. Pauley then lined a double to the gap in the left field, allowing Nowicki to score all the way from first as the Flyers picked up the walk-off victory 5-4.

The Flyers led 2-0 early, scoring single tallies in the first and third frames against Bear Bay. Travis Brown lifted a sacrifice fly in the first, scoring Brandon Newton who doubled to lead off the inning. Brown picked up his second RBI with a single in the third, again plating Newton.

Joliet responded with solo runs in the fourth and seventh off Brett Harker. Rios doubled in the fourth and scored on a Thon groundout to short. Jon Nelson struck with his seventh home run in the seventh to cut the deficit to 3-2.

Bay earned the no-decision, allowing only three runs on eight hits over seven innings with seven strikeouts to one walk. Shetrone picked up the loss, surrendering the game winning runs in the ninth for his third defeat of the season.

Harker shut down the JackHammers to the tune of two runs on three hits in eight innings of work. Evans earned the victory, striking out the only two batters he faced.

The JackHammers will look to snap their four game losing streak tomorrow night at Silver Cross Field as the Kansas City T-Bones visit Joliet for the first time this season. Devin Anderson (1-1) will go opposite Reid Santos (1-3). Game time is set for 7:10 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. pre-game show on 1340 WJOL.

Loose Gravel - Freddie Thon drove in three runs and now has 29 runs batted in on the season - Joliet dropped their fifth straight road game and are now 4-11 away from Silver Cross Field - Jon Nelson went 2-4 with a home run and extended his hitting streak to a season high five games
