Pauley Powers The Flyers To Series Sweep

June 24, 2010 - Northern League (NL)
Schaumburg Flyers News Release

The Flyers (11-21) knocked off the Jackhammers (14-17) in dramatic style with a bottom of the ninth walk-off double by Joe Pauley for a 5-4 win, securing Schaumburg's first series sweep of the season.

After a two-hour rain delay, the Flyers didn't wait long to strike. Brandon Newton led the bottom of the first off with a double and was driven home on a Travis Brown sacrifice fly.

Brown and Newton teamed up again in the bottom of the third to increase the Schaumburg lead. Newton laid down a beautiful bunt down the third base line and was driven in on Brown's single, plating the Flyers third baseman.

The Jackhammers picked up a run in the fourth off of a Kevin Rios double, who was eventually driven in on a Freddie Thon groundout.

Andre Marshall tacked another one on for the Flyers in fourth, sending the Bear Bay offering over the center field wall for his second home run of the series. Jackhammers right fielder Jon Nelson answered back with a solo shot of his own in the seventh.

Joey Gomes stretched his league leading hit streak to 18 games, going 3-4 with three singles.

That all led up to the ninth inning. The Flyers brought in closer Joshua Giles to seal the deal for starter Brett Harker. The righty tossed eight solid innings, allowing just two runs on three hits while striking out six.

Rios led off the top of the inning with a single. Then Brad Correll reached on a Brown error, putting men on first and second. Freddie Thon then drove both of them in on a double to deep center, giving the Jackhammers their first lead of the game, 4-3.

Yet, the Flyers didn't give up the faith. Chris Schultz led off the bottom of the ninth getting hit by a pitch followed by a Joe Nowicki bloop single into left field. With runners on first and second, Joe Pauley slammed a double deep to left that brought home Schultz and Nowicki, sending the Flyers faithful home happy.

Cody Evans (1-3), who recorded the final two outs in the ninth, got the win and Drew Shetrone (0-4) took the loss for the Jackhammers.

The Flyers kick off a four game set against the Fielders tomorrow night at Carthage College, Lake County's temporary home field in Kenosha, WI.

First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM. Join Alex Perlman on 1410 WRMN and flyersbaseball.com for all the action as the Flyers take on the Fielders. The Schaumburg Flyers Pregame Show gets rolling at 6:45 PM with the game to follow.
