The Fielders (11-21) fell to the Schaumburg Flyers (13-21) 4-3 in a tightly contested ballgame at Carthage College in Kenosha, WI Friday night.

Schaumburg got on the board first in the second inning. Terry Mermer reached on a lead off walk and was brought around to score after Tom Fitzgerald bunted and pitcher Garry Bakker overthrew the ball to first baseman Jeff Dunbar. Fitzgerald made his way to third on the throw and then crossed home on a wild pitch. With two runs scored, Bakker came firing back striking out three consecutive batters.

The Flyers tagged on two more runs on the top of the third after Bakker walked the bases loaded and Mermer hit a sac fly to score Travis Brown. Tom Fitzgerald brought around Gomes on an RBI single to put Schaumburg up 4-0.

The Fielders answered back with one run in the bottom of the fourth. Amos Ramon and Josh Short drew two walks to put runners on first and second. Cody Strait ripped an RBI single to score Ramon.

With runners on first and third in the top of the fifth, the Fielders and Bakker retired three consecutive Flyers to keep Schaumburg to four runs.

The Fielders closed the gap in the bottom of the fifth. Josh Short and Brian McFall drew back-to-back walks and advanced on a Alain Quijano wild pitch. Strait then tacked on his second RBI single to score Short. McFall was brought around on an RBI double from Aaron Cone, but the Fielders were done there.

Fielders southpaw Matt Schweitzer came in the eighth and struck out five consecutive Flyers, but the Fielders were unable to come up with any offense to get the win.

Garry Bakker took his fourth loss of the season. In five innings of work, he gave up three earned runs on three hits and struck out six. Flyers Brian McCullough got the win for the Flyers, giving up only two hits and striking out five in four and one-third innings of relief work.

The Fielders head to Schaumburg tomorrow for game three at Alexian Field at 6:00pm. Lake County will send newest RHP Jacob Marceaux to the mound opposite RHP Dustin Glant.
