June 25, 2010 - Northern League (NL)
Joliet JackHammers News Release
Brian Gartley coaxed a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the 11th as the Joliet JackHammers (15-17) downed the Kansas City T-Bones (20-14) 8-7 Thursday night at Silver Cross Field. Joliet erased a five run Kansas City lead and snapped a four game losing streak with the comeback victory.
The JackHammers started the rally in the 11th with a one out single by Chris Colton off Franklin Perez (0-1). Rafael Mendez followed with a single and Roberto Mena was hit by a pitch to load the bases with nobody out. That brought Brian Gartley to the plate as the JackHammers lost the designated hitter after Clint Toomey ran for Joe Billick in the bottom of the ninth. Gartley worked the count to 3-0 before taking two strikes and fouling off the next pitch. Perez then missed with a fastball inside to give Joliet the 8-7 win.
Gartley (2-0) not only picked up the game winning RBI, but also earned the victory with a scoreless top of the 11th while Perez earned his first loss for the T-Bones.
Joliet trailed 5-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth as T-Bone starter, Reid Santos, was perfect through the first five frames. Mendez broke up the perfect game with a leadoff single and the six run rally was underway. After Mena and Billick both walked, Jonathan Wyatt knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly. Kevin Rios doubled home a run and Brad Correll singled home another to tie the game at five. Colton gave the JackHammers their first lead at 6-5 with a single back up the middle.
Kansas City would retake the lead in the eighth off Mike Rocco and William Jackel. Brian Joynt and Ryan Fox each walked with one out to knock Rocco out of the game. Keith Hernandez stepped in and slapped the first pitch from Jackel into right centerfield to plate two and put the T-Bones up 7-6.
Devin Anderson got the start for Joliet and the lefty allowed five runs on seven hits in five plus innings of work. Rico Washington homered in the first and Joynt launched a two run bomb in the sixth to bounce Anderson and give the T-Bones a 5-0 lead.
Santos picked up a no-decision despite being perfect through five innings. The southpaw was charged with four runs on only two hits with two walks and two strikeouts in 5.1 frames.
Rios, Colton and Mendez each had two hits with Rios scoring a team high two runs.
Joynt led Kansas City with three hits and had a game high three runs scored while Hernandez knocked home a game best three runs.
The JackHammers and T-Bones will continue their four game set tomorrow night at Silver Cross Field. Rory Shortell (1-3) will go opposite Cody McAllister (3-2). First pitch is slated for 7:10 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. pre-game show on 1340 WJOL.
