Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks News Release
FARGO, ND - A home run in the top of the tenth inning by number nine hitter Mike Reese staked the Gary SouthShore RailCats to a 4-3 win over the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks on Friday night in front of a sold out Newman Outdoor Field. Reese had only one hit in his last 27 at-bats before he belted a line drive off Fargo-Moorhead's T.J. Stanton (1-2) over the left field wall.
Gary (19-16) took a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the ninth inning, but the RedHawks (20-11) rallied to force extra frames. Fargo-Moorhead's Eric Campbell singled up the middle off of RailCats closer Andy Shipman to lead off the inning. RedHawks catcher Alan Rick followed with a walk on an 11-pitch at-bat, fouling off five offerings with two strikes before drawing the free pass. Jake Krause then hit a soft liner to short for the first out of the inning, sending left fielder Jay Cox to the plate. Cox, who came into the game hitting .183, drove a pitch from Shipman to the opposite field that just cleared the fence to tie the ballgame.
Gary got a strong performance from starting pitcher Brad Halsey. He held the RedHawks scoreless in seven innings of work, giving up seven hits. Halsey also struck out three and walked two. He is perhaps best known for being sent from the New York Yankees to the Arizona Diamondbacks as part of the Randy Johnson trade and for giving up Barry Bonds' 714th home run, which tied him for second all-time with Babe Ruth.
RedHawks starter and Fargo native Jake Laber gave up three runs (two earned) in eight innings of action, scattering eight hits.
Shipman (1-0) got the win despite giving up three runs in one inning. Brad Furnish came on in the tenth to collect his first save of the season.
Leadoff hitter Adam Kein was 2-for-3 for Gary while RailCats right fielder Mike Massaro was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Cory Patton, Eric Campbell and Jay Cox each collected two hits for the RedHawks.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow night with the first pitch scheduled for 6:00pm. Veteran Willie Glen (3-2, 4.32) will take the hill for Gary while Chad Rhoades (3-1, 4.50) will look for his fourth win for Fargo-Moorhead.
