Kansas City Monarchs News Release

JOLIET, Ill. - Kevin Rios capped off a four-for-six night with a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Joliet JackHammers (16-17) their second straight walk-off victory over the Kansas City T-Bones (20-15) tonight, 6-5, at Silver Cross Field.

Kyle Heim (1-1) took the loss for Kansas City after surrendering the hit. Following a perfect ninth inning, Heim retired the first batter in the 10th before allowing back-to-back singles. The next batter, Clint Toomey, hit a groundball to short that hit Rafael Mendez on his way to third. Jonathan Wyatt then reached with an infield single before Rios ended the contest with his fourth hit of the night.

Heim was charged with one run on five hits, all singles, in the loss.

Former T-Bone Brad Correll drove in the first run of the game with a first-inning single against Cody McAllister. Ray Sadler responded in the second inning with a leadoff home run off Rory Shortell to tie the game at one. After Brian Joynt reached on an infield single two batters later, Ryan Fox singled to left and advanced to second on an error by Wyatt. Joynt scored on the play to give the T-Bones a 2-1 lead.

The JackHammers regained the lead with two runs in their half of the second, plating the final tally on an RBI single by Rios. Kansas City tied the game at three in the fifth on an RBI groundout by Jacob Blackwood and pushed the score to 4-3 on a solo home run by Eladio Rodriguez in the top of the seventh. Joliet again responded quickly, tying the game at four on an RBI single by Freddie Thon in their half of the frame.

McAllister left after six and two-thirds innings having allowed four runs, two earned, on nine hits. Kansas City picked up their final run in the eighth on a throwing error by Mendez. Shortell left with two outs in the frame having allowed five runs, two earned, on seven hits.

Down 5-4, Joliet again brought the teams even in the bottom of the eighth against the T-Bones bullpen. Kevin Light, who got the final out for McAllister in the seventh, put the first two JackHammers on in the eighth with a walk and a single before giving way to Erik Hamren. After a failed sacrifice bunt attempt erased the lead runner, Hamren walked the next hitter before a sacrifice fly from Wyatt brought the score to 5-5.

JackHammers reliever William Jackel (3-0) threw the final two and one-thirds scoreless innings to earn the victory. Rios finished with a double and two RBI for Joliet.

Left-hander Brett Davis (2-2, 7.34) takes the mound for Kansas City in game three tomorrow night opposite right-hander Ross Stout (2-3, 3.08) and the JackHammers. First pitch is set for 7:10.
