Green Bay Blizzard News Release
The Green Bay Blizzard is pleased to announce that Antonio Ficklin has signed a free agent contract with the Detroit Lions. The 6'2, 270 pound Fullback/Linebacker from San Jose State will be participating in Detroit's rookie mini-camp next week. In his three games with the Blizzard, Ficklin set himself apart as the team's leading rusher gaining 64 yards on 19 carries, averaging 2.9 yards per carry. Ficklin averaged 18.3 yards per game and recorded two touchdowns in his three appearances.
Ficklin was signed by the Lions as a fullback which is the position he was projected to play coming out of high school. Upon his enrollment at San Jose State University in 2001 Ficklin was moved to linebacker. Ficklin recorded 52 tackles, 17 for a loss, and 7 sacks in the 2004 season. Ficklin also forced one fumble, and recovered another which he returned 20 yards for a touchdown in the '04 season. In 2003 Ficklin recorded 35 tackles, 6 for a loss, and 4 sacks for the Spartans. Ficklin finished his career at San Jose State totaling 122 tackles, 26.5 for a loss, 12 sacks, one interception, three forced fumbles, and one defensive touchdown. The Shreveport native lettered in football, basketball, and track and field at Natchitoches Central High School in Louisiana. This opportunity with Detroit will mark Ficklin's second chance with an NFL team. Ficklin signed a contract with the San Francisco 49rs as an undrafted free agent on April 28, 2005 and spent time with the team during training camp and the preseason before being released on September 4, 2005. Following his stay with the 49rs, Ficklin spent time in the CFL with the Calgary Stampede as a defensive lineman.
Gustavus Tyson will get the start at fullback for the Blizzard this week as they head to Huntsville, AL to take on the Tennessee Valley Vipers. Tyson has three carries for six yards and one touchdown this year for the Blizzard.
