Pensacola Ice Flyers News Release
Pensacola, Fla - Goaltender Gerry Festa received the nod to start in goal for the Ice Flyers Friday night at the Pensacola Bay Center as they faced the Columbus Cottonmouths. Festa turned aside all 30 shots he faced to help lead his team to a 4-0 victory in front of 3,525 fans.
Pensacola set the tone early with two goals on their first two shots on goal. Ryan Raven scored his fifth goal in the last four games just 61 seconds after the opening faceoff, with his linemates Jordan Chong and Ryan Salvis collecting the assists. Only 22 seconds later, Raven and Chong set up defenseman Steve Bergin to go up 2-0 early in the game.
In the second period, Festa would come up with some big saves to preserve the shutout and the Ice Flyers' 2-0 lead, including a stop on a breakaway by Columbus' leading scorer, Matt Gingera.
While playing 4-on-4, Salvis fed the puck to Tyler Soehner who made it 3-0 for the Ice Flyers. Chong would draw the second assist. Then 4:24 into the third period, Bill Foster and Jeremiah Ketts would set up Brent Clarke to put their team up 4-0.
Festa faced 17 shots on goal in the final period alone, a total of 30 for the game, but nothing made it past him on this night. The Ice Flyers put up 37 shots on Columbus' Ian Vigier.
Pensacola went 0 - 6 on the power play, while Columbus went 0 - 2.
The Cottonmouths host the Huntsville Havoc Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. EST to finish their weekend. The Ice Flyers travel to Augusta to battle the RiverHawks at 6:35 p.m. CST Saturday night.
