Amarillo Gorillas News Release

Rapid City, SD 3/3/09 - The Amarillo Gorillas gave up five second period goals en route to getting shut out by the Rapid City Rush 6-0 Tuesday night at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center Arena.

In a close first period, it was the Rush that got the edge early on. Rapid City's Kyle Sheen scored after Amarillo netminder A.J. Bucchino gave up a rebound off a Luke Fritshaw shot from the point-Sheen poked the puck past Bucchino to give Rapid City the opening lead. The goal, scored at 6:04 of the first period, would turn out to be the game-winner for the Rush, who held Amarillo scoreless on eight first period shots.

The visitors would struggle mightily in the second period, however, giving up a Derek LeBlanc goal just 3:22 into the period. Jamie VanderVeeken would follow moments later, scoring on a shot that was tipped past Bucchino by an Amarillo player at 5:15 of the second. Derek Legault would keep the scoring charge going for the Rush, scoring his first goal as a Rapid City player 2:47 of playing time later. A shorthanded Chris Lipsett goal and a Mitch Stephens tally with just 3.7 seconds remaining in the period would finish off the Rapid City scoring. Five unanswered second period goals put the hosts on top, 6-0.

Rapid City goaltender Miguel Beaudry would turn aside all 12 Amarillo shots in the third period to preserve his third shutout of the season, and the win for the Rush. Mike Gorman, who entered the game in relief of Bucchino, stopped all nine shots he faced in the third period. The blanking was only the second time Amarillo has been shut out in 2008-09, with the previous occasion coming in a 6-0 loss to New Mexico on October 18.

Amarillo (16-35-3) fell to 2-1-1 this season against Rapid City with the loss. The two teams will battle again Wednesday night at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center, with the game starting at 8:05 PM Central Time. Coverage of the game will be carried on 1010-AM "The Canyon" in Amarillo and worldwide via a free, online video stream through the CHL Network.
