Fehd Scores Twice in Mayhem Victory over Knoxville

Hosting the Knoxville Ice Bears on First Responders Night, the Mayhem cruised to a 6-3 triumph to rise to the top of the SPHL standings.
A frantic opening period was on hand, with a total of five goals being scored in the first 20 minutes of play. It only took the Mayhem 2:28 to draw first blood.
John Siemer kicked off an action-riddled first period with a primary assist on Brandon Fehd's goal. Fehd unleashed a heavy slap shot from the straightaway deep slot, beating Michael Santaguida cleanly to open the scoring with his second goal of the season. At 11:49, Siemer added a shorthanded goal by cleaning up a loose puck near the crease, registering the Mayhem's first shorthanded goal of the season.
The Mayhem's two-goal lead, however, was almost immediately erased. Just 18 seconds later, Danny Cesarz struck on Knoxville's power play to cut the lead in half. After another 28 seconds, Liam Kerins snapped a shot inside the right post to beat Jordan Ruby past the glove, tying the game up 2-2. Justin Levac responded at 16:19 on a one-timer from the slot, and the Mayhem entered the first intermission with a 3-2 lead.
Period two was far more serene than the first, but plenty still happened on both sides. The Mayhem promptly fought off two penalties early, but could not fight off a third. At 36:52, Ilya Bobko tapped the puck past Ruby following an intricate passing play by Knoxville. Bobko's power play strike was his first goal of the season, but the Mayhem had another fairly quick response.
Just 1:43 after Bobko's goal, Jake Trask motored down his off-wing and dangled around the Ice Bears' defense. He finished off the maneuver by rifling his shot over the shoulder of Santaguida to regain Macon's advantage heading into the second intermission.
Early in the third, multiple ice divots caused a long delay in the action and sent both teams back to their respective locker rooms while the issues were resolved by the Macon Centreplex arena staff. On the ensuing offensive zone faceoff, Fehd immediately blasted a one-timer past Santaguida for his second goal of the game.
After a Derek Sutliffe goal was waived off due to a controversial goaltender interference call, SPHL Star of the Week Lucas Bombardier earned a penalty shot and had a chance to draw the Ice Bears to within one. However, he was denied by the glove hand of Ruby, who kept momentum on the home side with the enormous save.
At 50:22, Mike Chemello erased all doubt with a snipe from the mid-slot. His first goal as a Mayhem sealed Knoxville's fate, and the Mayhem would hold on to earn a 6-3 result.
Ruby earned his first victory of the 2018-19 season, stopping 32 of a possible 35 shots. Santaguida was charged with his first regulation defeat of the season, denying 30 of 36. The Mayhem will host the Pensacola Ice Flyers tomorrow on Nickelodeon Night, where Mayhem fans can re-live some of their favorite Nickelodeon shows and characters. Puck drop is set for 7:35 pm ET.
