Brockton Rox News Release

(Brockton, Mass. - August 3, 2011) - The New York Federals (3-15, 13-52) made it two wins in three games against the Brockton Rox (11-6, 37-26) with an 8-6 victory in Wednesday morning's rubber match at Campanelli Stadium.

New York jumped out to an early 2-0 lead against former Federal Jake Loye (5.0 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 3 K) on two singles, a walk and a passed ball in the first frame, but the Rox answered right back scoring the next four.

Keith Brachold plated Mike Torres on a ground out in the bottom of the first and then Brockton added three more runs on four singles in the second to take a 4-2 lead.

The seesaw battled continued as the Feds eventually retook the lead and chased Loye in the fifth as five of the first six batters reached, scoring three runs on three hits and an error.

The Rox scored four runs (three earned) on nine hits against James Kukucka, before Andy Watson entered to open the sixth frame and immediately gave up a pair of runs, evening the tally. Tucker Nathans and Chris Valencia both singled with one out and Torres (2-for-5, 2 RBI, R) followed with a two-run base hit to tie the game at six.

Mark Rosen (2-2) came on in the sixth for the Rox and started off magnificently, retiring the first seven to face him, but then ran into trouble in the eighth. Derrick Pyles doubled with one out, followed by a Sandy DeLeon walk. Mike Levy gave the Feds the lead with an RBI single and then the second run of the frame came in as Rosen balked.

The 8-6 lead proved to be sufficient for New York as the lead off hitter reached for Brockton in each of the final three innings, but the Rox failed to scratch a run against relievers Alex Foltz (1-0) and James Bierlein (1). Foltz earned his first win, tossing two scoreless frames, while Bierlein secured the save in the ninth.

Highlighting the offensive effort for New York was a 3-for-4 day from Pyles (RBI, R), Brad Jackson's two hits and two RBIs and Jake Rosenbeck's first professional home run.

The series victory for New York is the road team's first of the season. The Federals had previously split a four game set with the Rox in the first half.

Thursday night marks the beginning of a new series, as the homestand continues with four straight against the Rockland Boulders. Mike Smith (7-4, 3.89) will toe the rubber for Brockton against Ryan Knippschild (0-1, 7.62) in game one. First pitch on Heineken Thirsty Thursday is set for 7:05 p.m.
