New York Red Bulls News Release
SECAUCUS, NJ (August 30, 2009) - In the first annual FDNY vs. NYPD Mayor's Cup played at Giants Stadium on Sunday, it was the Fire Department that came out with a 3-0 victory prior to the New York Red Bulls vs. Columbus Crew match.
The FDNY Bravest scored the game-winning goal early in the first half after a corner kick that hit the post and Tom Hunt was there to slam in the rebound for a 1-0 lead. The FDNY Bravest added its second goal early in the second half when Rob Fucci struck a line drive after Chris Smith stole the ball and split two defenders with a pass. The NYPD Finest had its chances late to cut into the lead, having two goals called back -- one for a quick start and the second for a foul -- and then missing a penalty kick. Mike Kozo of the FDNY put the game out of reach when he stole the ball and scored after a goal kick went short.
More than just bragging rights, the two teams were playing to support several charity. A portion of every ticket sold to the match went to support the NYC PBA Widow's and Children's Fund and The FF Sergio Villanueva Soccer Foundation.
