FC Dallas News Release
LOS ANGELES- FC Dallas selected midfielder Jacori Hayes (1st round, 18th overall), center back Walker Hume (2nd round, 37th overall) and winger Adonijah Reid (2nd round, 40th overall) in today's 2017 MLS SuperDraft.
"We're excited to welcome these players to the club," FC Dallas head coach Oscar Pareja said. "Hayes is a good player from a good program. He is young. He has a high ceiling. He is a type of player that you don't often see."
Hayes, 21, appeared in 81 matches for Wake Forest University since joining the Demon Deacons in 2013. In four seasons, Hayes found the back of the net 15 times and assisted on 15 others. He was named a NSCAA First Team All-American in 2016. Born at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland, Hayes was also an All-American at Dematha Catholic HS. He earned a USSDA Eastern Conference Starting XI nod during his time with the Baltimore Bays in 2011-12.
"It's a dream come true to become a professional," said Hayes. "FC Dallas had great success last season. I am looking to come in and do my part and help them out. [FC Dallas head coach Oscar Pareja] gives chances out if you're working hard and producing. My goal this year is to give him some tough decisions. It's comforting to know your coaching staff and owners have faith in you. I just want to repay them and thank them for drafting me. I'm going to work hard for this club."
Hayes was a roommate of FC Dallas and U.S. National Team midfielder Kellyn Acosta during their time with the U.S U-18 and U-20 National Teams.
Hume, 23, scored 20 goals and added 10 assists as a defender during his collegiate career, which began at NCAA Division II Sunshine State Conference, Rollins College. During his two seasons with the Tars, Hume had 12 goals and four assists. The 6-5 defender transferred to the University of North Carolina for his junior and senior seasons, where he found the back of the net eight times and assisted on six more.
"We see potential in Hume," said Pareja. "We were looking for a center back, one who could come in and provide depth. He has the physical attributes and a lot of potential."
Born in Dallas, Texas, Hume attended Westlake HS in Austin, Texas. He won a Premier Development League Championship with the Austin Aztex in 2013. His grandfather, Tom Franckhauser, played for the Dallas Cowboys' inaugural team in 1960.
Reid, 17, is the first Canadian Generation adidas player selected in an MLS SuperDraft. He won the Golden Boot in League1 Ontario after scoring 20 goals for ANB Futbol in the third division of Canadian Soccer.
"Reid is a good find," said Pareja. "He is very young and he has been advancing on his own. For him to come and join our program and compete for a position is a good idea."
Reid was a member of Canada's most recent U-20 National Team camp as the squad prepares for the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Korea.
"I didn't actually know there was a Canadian National Team player, playing for FC Dallas, until today [Tesho Akindele]," said Reid. "It makes it even better. He can help me. I'm sure. I will feel even more welcome in Dallas. I've never been to Texas so it will be a new experience, new culture. I'm happy and I'm ready."
