FC Dallas Re-Signs Midfielder Marvin Chavez

FRISCO, Texas (Jan. 19, 2010) - Following a breakout season in which Marvin Chavez scored three goals and added four assists in 20 appearances, the 27-year-old Honduran International has agreed to extend his contract with MLS Cup Finalists FC Dallas, the club announced today. Per Major League Soccer and club policy, terms of the deal will not be disclosed.

"We are extremely excited to re-sign Marvin Chavez," head coach Schellas Hyndman said. "When FC Dallas was playing its best soccer of the year, Marvin was on the field for us. He is extremely athletic, very quick and fast. He is able to penetrate from the flanks with a dribble, a pass or on a penetrating run."

Chavez picked up his first MLS game-winning assist in a 1-0 win against Toronto on Sept. 4. He netted his first MLS goal in a 3-1 win over the Kansas City Wizards on Sept. 25, and then he tallied his second goal in the very next match, a 3-0 win over the Chicago Fire on Oct. 2.

Chavez was at his best during FC Dallas' run to MLS Cup in 2010, scoring a goal and two assists in four playoffs appearances. He assisted David Ferreira on Dallas' 26th minute goal against the Los Angeles Galaxy in the Western Conference Final and then added an MLS playoff goal to his resume 47 minutes later, when Ferreira split the Galaxy defense with a through ball. In behind the Los Angeles defense, Chavez collected the pass and beat Galaxy goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts for a 3-0 lead in the 73rd minute.

Currently on international duty with Honduras in the Copa Centroamericana Tournament, Chavez made his first appearance for FC Dallas on Sept. 12, 2009 versus the Galaxy. Prior to joining Dallas, Chavez tallied 11 goals and 11 assists with Club Deportivo Marathon of Honduras' Primera Division. He scored the game-winning goal against D.C. United to propel Marathon into the quarterfinal round of the 2008/2009 CONCACAF Champions League tournament.

"I am very pleased to renew my contract," Chavez said. "I am happier still for the gratitude of the coaching staff, the board of executives and the fans. Since I have been back in Honduras, I've been hoping that things would turn out positive to be back with FC Dallas.

"The challenge is to keep the same level I had at the end of the season. More than anything the mindset for this season is to try and be champions because we were so close last year, but unfortunately we failed. Personally, my goal this year is to be a starting player on the team."
