Portland Timbers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland Timbers today named former player Scot Thompson as the team's official community ambassador as the club makes its Major League Soccer debut in 2011.
As the community ambassador, Thompson will act as the primary liaison between the Timbers community outreach department and other selected ambassadors. Thompson will facilitate various community appearances, events and speaking engagements involving Timbers players. His other responsibilities will include promoting the continued success of the organization through soccer operations and sponsorship.
"Scot has been a class act for many years both on and off the field," said Timbers general manager and technical director Gavin Wilkinson. "With this exciting appointment, we are delighted to continue working with Scot in making a difference in the community and we know there is no one better suited to doing this."
Thompson retired from soccer following the 2010 season. He was the Timbers' USL career leader with 156 games and 12,994 minutes played, and contributed nine goals and nine assists during his seven-year stint with Portland (2004-10).
Thompson will also act as the lead ambassador of the Portland Timbers Alumni Association and serve as the main contact for all requests of alumni and ambassadors.
Thompson performed a similar duty in 2010, when he served in a dual role as the team's community ambassador while completing his seventh season with the club as a player. He was awarded 2010 Timbers Community Player of the Year honors for his involvement.
"I'm extremely grateful and excited to continue working with the Timbers," Thompson said. "Soccer has been such a positive influence in my life and I look forward to being a part of an organization that shares that mentality. My goal is to make the community a better place in any way I can."
