FRISCO, Texas - FC Dallas (10-5-5, 35 points) played to a scoreless draw with D.C. United (5-5-8, 23 points) in front of 10,802 fans at Pizza Hut Park tonight. The shutout was the 103rd of FC Dallas goalkeeper Kevin Hartman's career.
In the first half, the home side held a 58/42 edge in possession. The defending Western Conference Champions' best opportunity to score came in the 10th minute, when Brazilians Jackson and Ricardo Villar combined on the right side of D.C. goalkeeper Bill Hamid's goal. The duo's one-two pass freed up Jackson to send in a low cross across the face of goal, but the pass was intercepted by Hamid's kick save.
D.C. United countered in the 34th minute, earning a free kick 35 yards from goal following a foul by Jair Benitez on the right flank. Andy Najar served a ball that was deflected to the back post for Brandon McDonald, who came free of his marker, but the first-touch volley sailed inches over Hartman's crossbar to keep the match tied 0-0 heading into the break.
FC Dallas began the second half on the attack with Brek Shea testing Hamid low to the back post. The 6-3 goalkeeper made another strong save to his right side, pushing the shot wide of the post and out for a corner. One minute later in the 52nd minute, Shea ran at a defender on the opposite side of the area. Just before Shea cut inside the area, the Texan drew a foul that resulted in an FC Dallas free kick. Captain Daniel Hernandez took the kick, opting to knock a lateral pass to Eric Alexander, who had his low shot blocked by an alert D.C. United defender.
The Dallas side had two more chances to go up a goal late in the second half. The first came when Marvin Chavez pressured a defender high and forced a turnover that resulted in a two-on-none situation against Hamid. The goalkeeper charged off his line to cut down Chavez's angle, forcing the speedy Honduran to knock his shot wide of the far post.
FC Dallas' final chance to earn a victory came and went in the 87th minute. A long cross from the left flank off the foot of defender Jair Benitez met Jackson perfectly at the back post. Jackson attempted to redirect a shot on goal with his first touch, but saw the bouncing shot deflect off the top of the crossbar and out of play.
