Brockton Rox News Release
Little Falls, N.J. - Brockton 1B Melvin Falu went 4-for-5 with a triple to help the Rox to a 9-7 victory over the New Jersey Jackals in a Can-Am League affair at Yogi Berra Stadium on Friday evening.
The Rox drew first blood with a sacrifice fly by C Chris Grossman in the second, and added another pair of runs in the third on Falu's RBI triple and a sacrifice fly from LF Mike Conroy, making it a 3-0 Brockton lead.
New Jersey regained the advantage in their half of the third with four runs on an RBI double by 2B Argenis Reyes, a run-scoring groundout by 3B Abraham Nunez, and RBI hits from DH Shawn Riggans and 1B Jordan Newton.
The back-and-forth contest would see the Rox take back the lead with a three-run fifth, courtesy of a bases-loaded walk and bases-loaded hit by pitch, as well as an RBI single by 2B Derek Kinzler. Brockton then made it an 8-4 game in a sixth inning that included an RBI single from 3B Phil Cuadrado.
The runs proved to be important, as the Jackals quickly responded with a pair of runs in their half of the sixth. The scored stayed 8-6, Brockton, until the eighth, when the Rox added an insurance run on a bases-loaded walk to DH Scott Wearne. New Jersey tacked on a tally in the ninth but could come no closer, for the final 9-7 score.
Brockton's 13 hits were second-most on the season, a mark second only to the 15 hits in the club's 13-3 win over Worcester on May 29. RF Keith Brachold, Cuadrado, Wearne and Kinzler each had a pair of hits for the Rox.
Newton was 3-for-5 with a pair or RBI to lead the Jackals attack.
Mike Wlodarczyk (1-0) earned his first victory of the season for Brockton (4-4), giving up six runs on ten hits in six innings of work. Ryan Lobban was saddled with the defeat for the Jackals (3-6); the lefthander allowed six runs on eight hits in four and two-thirds. Josh Papelbon earned his first save in a Rox uniform, hurling a scoreless ninth.
The two teams will meet in the third game of the series on Saturday night, with Brockton's Freddy Flores (1-0) facing New Jersey's Chris Allen (0-1).
