New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, NJ - After Thursday's 1-0 New Jersey Jackals' victory, the Brockton Rox pounded out nine runs on 13 hits to defeat the Jackals 9-6 on Friday night at Yogi Berra Stadium.
Brockton jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings against New Jersey starter Ryan Lobban behind an RBI triple off the bat of first baseman Melvin Falu and a pair of sacrifice flies by catcher Chris Grossman and left fielder Mike Conroy.
But New Jersey battled back in the bottom of the third to take a 4-3 lead. After back-to-back one-out singles by first baseman Matt Stiffler and center fielder Kevin Clark, second baseman Argenis Reyes double home the Jackals first run of the night. Third baseman Abraham Nunez then plated Clark on a groundout to second before an infield single by Shawn Riggans evened the score at three. Left Fielder Jordan Newton's RBI triple to center plated Riggans to put New Jersey on top.
Brockton would score the game's next five runs to gain an 8-4 advantage. New Jersey, though, would claw back once again to pull within two in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI groundout by right fielder Jeff Grose and a Brockton throwing error on a ball hit by Stiffler with two outs. Stiffler injured his hamstring on the play and had to leave the game.
The Rox added an insurance run in the top of the eighth on a bases-loaded walk by designated hitter Scott Wearne and with a 9-6 lead, Brockton turned the ball over to closer Josh Papelbon in the ninth. Papelbon surrendered one run on a Newton single and New Jersey advanced the tying run to second, but Papelbon escaped the jam and preserved the two-run victory to notch his first save of the season.
Brockton starter Mike Wlodarczyk (1-0) earned the win after allowing six runs, five earned, in six innings with four strikeouts. For New Jersey, left-hander Ryan Lobban (0-1) went 4 2/3 innings and surrendered six runs on eight hits with four walks and five strikeouts.
For the Jackals, Nunez went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI while Newton collected three hits in five at-bats. Clark scored two runs in the losing effort. Falu led the charge for Brockton, going 4-for-3 with an RBI triple and two runs scored.
The Jackals (3-6) and Rox (4-4) continue their four-game series on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. when New Jersey sends right-hander Chris Allen (0-1, 4.76 ERA) to the mound against Brockton righty Freddy Flores (1-0, 3.00 ERA). Cody Chrusciel has the live call on the Jackals webcast beginning 10 minutes prior to first pitch at www.jackals.com.
