Brockton Rox News Release
Brockton, MA (September 4, 2008) - On the day the 2008 Can-Am League Playoffs began, the league announced its 2008 post season All-Star team which included three members of the Brockton Rox. Rox 2B Melvin Falu, OF Jud Thigpen, and RHP Jerry Dunn were all selections of the team which was determined by votes from all eight managers and media members of the teams in the league.
Rox owner Van Schley was thrilled to hear of the deserving selections, and believes the three can be pillars for the future of the organization.
"I'm very excited that these guys are being rewarded for the tremendous seasons that each of them had," he said. "They were certainly deserving of this recognition, and the three of them returning in 2009 will set a solid foundation for a successful season."
All three players set team records in 2008. Melvin Falu had one of the most memorable seasons in Can-Am League history. Falu shattered the Can-Am League record for batting average in a single season, batting .383 on the year. He also broke the league record for hits in a single season, finishing with 140 in 93 games. Both marks were Rox franchise records as well. The Rox organization and fans tabbed him as the team's Most Valuable Player.
Jerry Dunn finished tied for the league lead in saves and established a new Rox record in a single season with 24. He finished the season with a 2-4 record and a 1.45 ERA in 43 appearances. He struck out 38 batters and walked just nine in 43.1 innings pitched. A former draft pick of the Detroit Tigers, Dunn has compiled 42 saves over the last two seasons and has allowed a total of 11 earned runs in over 80 innings of work. He was recognized as the team's Most Valuable Pitcher.
Jud Thigpen set new Rox records for home runs (17) and RBI (70) in a season and played in every single one of the Rox 94 games. Thigpen hit .295 on the year and also led the club with 35 walks.
