Brockton Rox News Release
Brockton, Mass. - Rox 1B Melvin Falu blasted three home runs as Brockton engineered another comeback victory, 7-6, over the Quebec Capitales in a thrilling Can-Am League contest at Stade de Quebec on Sunday afternoon.
Quebec (3-4 second half, 33-21 overall) got on the board with a two-run first inning, courtesy of a sacrifice fly by CF Goefrey Tomlinson and an RBI single by 1B Michael Thompson. Rox 2B Derek Kinzler responded with an RBI single of his own in the second inning, before Brockton took a 3-2 lead in the third inning when CF Chris Valencia singled and was brought home on Falu's first homer of the afternoon.
The scored stayed that way until the fifth inning, when Falu's two-out solo blast made it a 4-2 game. Quebec responded with four runs in its half of the frame on RF Sebastien Boucher's two-run double and Thompson's two-run single.
Brockton (4-3, 31-23) then worked its way back, first tallying a single run in the seventh on RF Keith Brachold's run-scoring groundout. The Rox followed it up by tying the game with LF Mike Conroy's eighth-inning RBI single, his eighth RBI of the four-game series. Falu put Brockton ahead for good in the ninth with his solo home run; the third homer of the day put him in the league lead with 12. He also has 32 homers in his Rox career, one short of Jake Daubert's career high.
Colin Lynch (4-3) pitched a scoreless seventh and eighth innings of relief for the victory. The righthander earned all three of the Rox wins in the four-game series. Starter Mike Smith received a no-decision, allowing five earned runs on nine hits in six innings of work, striking out three. Brad Hertzler struck out the side in the ninth inning for the save.
Falu ended the day 4-for-5, while Valencia was 3-for-5, and Brachold and Conroy both had a pair of hits. C Chris Grossman's fifth-inning single marked his 500th professional base hit.
For Quebec, Thompson and SS Ivan Naccarata both had three hits on the afternoon. Stephen Belanger (0-1) was tagged with the loss, allowing Falu's homer in the ninth.
Brockton starts a three-game series at New Jersey on Monday evening at 7:05 p.m., with the Rox' Mike Wlodarczyk (6-3) facing Paul Fagan, who makes his debut for the Jackals.
