Springfield Falcons News Release
Springfield, MA â The Providence Bruins scored twice in the final 1:45 of Saturday night's preseason game to overcome the Springfield Falcons, 4-3, at the Olympia Ice Center. Rookie left wing Adam Henrich figured in the scoring of all three Falcons' goals, posting a goal and two assists. Jarrod Skalde registered a goal and and an assist for Springfield. Providence's Ben Guite scored two goals, including the game-winner, and collected an assist to lead the Bruins. The Falcons will look to avenge the loss in the final game of their preseason schedule against the P-Bruins at Bridgewater Ice Arena on Sunday. Game time is 2:00.
Leading 3-2 late in the final frame, the Falcons found themselves short two men after penalties to Evgeni Artukhin and Henrich. Springfield was able to kill off the five-on-three power-play, but surrendered a goal to Bruins' center Kris Vernarsky while still short one skater at 18:15. Guite followed with the game-winning tally from the edge of the crease with one minute remaining on the game clock.
Henrich had snapped a 2-2 tie for Springfield with a goal off a scramble in front of the P-Bruins' net 2:19 into the third period. Veterans Skalde and Terry Virtue recorded assists on the tally.
Providence struck first in the game on Guite's opening goal of the evening 12:15 into the contest. From the top of the crease, Guite redirected a feed from forward Yorick Treille over the shoulder of Falcons netminder Brian Eklund.
Skalde buried the rebound of a shot from Henrich to knot the score 1:14 later. First-year right wing Andre Deveux also assisted on the goal that resulted from some extended pressure by the Falcons. The marker was Skalde's second of the preseason.
Defenseman Marc Busenburg, a native of Shrewsbury, Mass., provided the Falcons a 2-1 lead with a power-play goal 3:57 into the second period. The blue liner beat the Providence defense to the net to collect a centering feed from Henrich before lifting a shot past Bruins netminder Hannu Toivonen.
Left wing Deker Bekar capitalized on a Bruins' man advantage with 3:43 remaining in the middle frame by snapping a shot into the top corner from between the face-off circles.
Eklund made 31 saves in the Springfield net. Toivonen turned aside 20 of 23 shots for Providence.
