Fresno Falcons News Release
Fresno, Calif. - The Fresno Falcons announced today that the team has signed goaltender Scott Stirling to a contract for the 2006-07 season. He becomes the eleventh player, and the first goaltender, signed by the Falcons for the upcoming season.
The 29-year-old Stirling is one of the most accomplished goaltenders in ECHL history. In 182 ECHL games with Atlantic City, Trenton, and Peoria, he has a record of 114-45-16. His 114 wins are the 11th most in league history, while his 2.36 goals-against average is tied for ninth all-time. Additionally, he has appeared in more ECHL All-Star Games, three, than any other goaltender in league history.
Stirling has accumulated his fair share of hardware during his six-year career. In his rookie campaign of 2000-01, he posted a record of 32-10-3 with a 2.14 goals-against average on his way to earning Goaltender of the Year, Rookie of the Year, 1st-Team All-Star, and All-Rookie Team honors. During the 2002-03 season, Stirling helped lead the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies to the Kelly Cup Championship, and followed that up with a spectacular 2003-04 campaign in Atlantic City, winning 31 games and posting a career-best 1.91 goals-against average. Following that season, Stirling was named as the league's Most Valuable Player, and once again earned 1st-Team All-Star honors, and was honored as Goaltender of the Year, becoming the only two-time winner of the award in ECHL history.
"To win a championship, you need to have a great goaltender, and Scott Stirling certainly qualifies as one," Falcons Head Coach and General Manager Matt Thomas said. "Not only has Scott proven that he is a great goaltender with his career statistics, but he has also won a championship with me in Atlantic City. With his career pedigree, we are certainly hopeful that he can do the same here in Fresno this season."
"In looking at our options this summer, Fresno seemed to be the right fit for both myself and my family," Stirling said. "The team will have a great chance to win this year, especially after getting a taste of playoff success last season. We are excited to get out there, and are hoping to be a big part of the team's success this season."
In addition to his time in the ECHL, Stirling has appeared in 29 American Hockey League games putting together a record of 14-13-1. He also has spent time in the United Hockey League, appearing in a career-high 59 games with the Danbury Trashers in 2004-05, and winning a career-high 35 times. During that campaign, he participated in the UHL All-Star Game, marking the fourth All-Star Game appearance of his career.
Overall in his professional career, Stirling has appeared in 270 games, with a record of 163-76-22, for an overall winning percentage of .644.
