Fresno Falcons News Release
FRESNO, Calif. â The Fresno Falcons overcame a 2-0 first period deficit to tie the game at two early in the second but could not manage a second come-back effort before eventually falling to the Bakersfield Condors, 5-2, on Sunday at Selland Arena in front of a crowd of 4,902.
The Condors opened the scoring at 8:44 of the first after Wes Swinson scored his first in a Bakersfield uniform on the power play. They struck again just 15 seconds later when former Falcon Christian Skoryna snuck a rebound by Fresno goaltender Terry Friesen, and the Condors took a 2-0 lead to the second period.
The Falcons controlled play during the middle frame and quickly tied the game. Colin Embley finally beat Condors netminder Kevin St. Pierre at 2:48 for his 17th of the year, which was followed by Ryan Duthie's ninth tally of the season at 5:57. Fresno would generate many more scoring chances during the second but were continually thwarted by St. Pierre, who made 34 saves on the evening. Despite getting outshot 18-5 in the frame, Bakersfield re-claimed a 3-2 lead heading to the third as Paul Willett lifted home his 19th of the season off a carom off the backboards at 11:52.
Bakersfield gained some breathing room in the third to lead 4-2 when Shawn Byram beat Friesen seconds after a Condors power play expired at 13:51. Fresno never really threatened again, and Nate Anderson added an empty-netter with 17 seconds to play for the final 5-2 margin.
The Falcons drop to 26-17-5 overall and 2-8-1 against Bakersfield. They lose ground in the standings, their 57 points trailing the third-place Condors by six points and the second-place San Diego Gulls by eight points.
San Diego arrives tomorrow for a 1 p.m. matinee at Selland. Tickets are still available at the Selland box office, all Ticketmaster outlets and online at www.ticketmaster.com.
