Fresno Falcons News Release

FRESNO, Calif. - The first-place Fresno Falcons will celebrate Veterans Day this weekend at Save Mart Center by wearing military-themed specialty jerseys during both of their games against the Utah Grizzlies and San Diego Gulls at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, respectively. The team will then auction off the game-worn sweaters following Saturday's contest to benefit Operation Soldier's Patriot Down Foundation.

Friday night's first-ever clash with the Grizzlies, which joined the ECHL this season from the American Hockey League, will feature the playing of The Star-Spangled Banner by the 509th Military Band, the introduction of United States military veterans from World War II to the present, and the ceremonial puck drop by Army Staff Sergeant Michael Toews, a Fresno police officer who was wounded in action in Iraq on Oct. 1. In addition, the first 2,500 fans at the game will receive a Falcons wristband a la Lance Armstrong's Livestrong wristband.

On Saturday, the first 2,000 fans will receive a Falcons tumbler cup as the club renews its long-standing, bitter rivalry with the Gulls. The auction of the team's game-worn, military-themed specialty jerseys follows the game on the ice. A portion of the auction proceeds will benefit Operation Soldier's Patriot Down Foundation, which helps alleviate the financial burden on wounded soldiers' families whose loved ones are recuperating at out of town military hospitals throughout the country.

The Falcons enter tomorrow's game against Utah in first place in the ECHL's Pacific Division with 13 points. Tickets are on sale for both games this weekend at all Ticketmaster outlets and Save Mart Center's box office. Prices range from $8 - $23.
