Bloomington Extreme News Release
GREEN BAY, (Wis.)-With quarterback Eric McCollum starting in place of questionable Luke Drone, the Bloomington Extreme (2-2) have their two-game win streak snap at the hands of the Green Bay Blizzard (3-1) after the Blizzard defense holds the Extreme to only seven second half points.
McCollum was 12-of-24 with 141 yards with two touchdowns and one interception in the contest, while Bernard Payton was held to six rushes for 24 yards and touchdown. Harry Lewis led Extreme receivers with six receptions for 60 yards and caught both of McCollum's touchdown passes.
Jake Phillips brought the heat through the air by completing 14-of-24 passes for 194 yards with two down and an interception. Green Bay found the end zone the most on the ground, with two goal line touchdowns by Randy Bell, and one by Phillips. Both Derek Deardorff and Arlandus Hood both reaped the benefits of Phillip's passing game, with Deardorff pulling in three catches for 86 yards, and Hood with five catches and two touchdowns.
For the most part, the game was a defensive battle, where neither kicker could find the sweet spot between the uprights on all field goal attempts.
Green Bay got on the board first when Bell received a swing pass from Phillips for a run of 27 yards, then the followed up with a touchdown on the ground, 0-7 Green Bay.
Green Bay attempted an onside kick on the ensuing kickoff, but the extreme recovered the ball on the Blizzard 18 yard line. That led to Bernard Payton tying the game by punching the ball into the end zone, picking up his third touchdown of the season, 7-7.
Touchdowns for either team were not scored in the second quarter until there was less than a minute remaining. Set up by a 31 yard pass to newly acquired John Cooper, McCollum dishes out a touchdown pass to a wide open Harry Lewis with 36 seconds remaining in the half.
With only 32 seconds remaining in the first half, Green Bay fires back with a huge 37 yard pass to Deardorff. Phillips then uses a quarterback draw to tie the game going into the locker room, 14-14.
The Blizzard keeps its momentum rolling into the second half with another big catch and run play to Deardorff for 36 yards, then a touchdown to Hook in the back of the end zone, 14-21.
Eric McCollum responds to the score by throwing an 11 yard strike to Lewis for his second touchdown of the game, notching the game at 21. This would be the last visit to the end zone in the game for the Extreme
Green Bay takes the lead, 21-28 when Bell keeps his legs pushing and wills the ball across the goal line.
Newly acquired Rocky Hinds takes over the quarterback role for a lackluster series in the third quarter, and is intercepted on a desperation third down throw. BJ Brown returns the favor for the Extreme by leaping high for an interception on a deep pass by Phillips.
McCollum returns at quarterback, but is unable to earn a first down, leading to a field goal missed wide right by Pete Christofilakos. With the ball back in his hands, Phillips throws a dart to Orlandous Hood, scoring his seventh touchdown of the season, 21-35.
The Green Bay defense stiffens in the final quarter, holding the Extreme to zero fourth quarter points.
Bloomington head coach Kenton Carr was unhappy with the performance from the referees in the game, is ejected from the game when confronting one of the zebras.
Trying to get a final touchdown on the board, Eric McCollum fumbles the ball with 36 seconds remaining in the fourth and it is recovered by Green Bay's Darius Jones, putting the nail in the coffin for the Extreme.
Green Bay has a BYE week upcoming, allowing for rest before the Chicago Slaughter travel to U.S. Cellular Coliseum Saturday, April 10, at 7:00 p.m.
