Amarillo Soundly Wins Home Opener

Amarillo, TX - The Amarillo Venom earned their second win in as many games Saturday night, defeating the West Texas Roughnecks 55-33.

Amarillo scored first less than three minutes into the game, when wide receiver DuVaughn Flagler ran for a 45-yard touchdown on a drive that only took two plays. Odessa countered with an 11-yard field goal to trim the lead to four. The Venom came back on their next drive that culminated with running back Dontrell Moore scoring the first of four touchdowns on the night. On the ensuing drive, after Cashmin Thomas' interception (second in as many contest versus Odessa), wide receiver Alex Watson ended the drive with a two-yard scamper, ending the first quarter 21-3 in favor of the Venom.

The Venom were outscored in the second frame 16-14, as Odessa received touchdowns from former Amarillo wideout Steve Bergeski and an onside kick recovery for a touchdown by Darius Johnson. Amarillo's only two scores were produced by DuVaughn Flagler and fullback Kendrick Halloway (his first of the season). At halftime, Amarillo's defense held the Roughnecks to -18 yards rushing, while the Venom accumulated 194 total yards of total offense. Amarillo 35, West Texas 19 at the half.

Odessa jumped out to a 14-0 run to start the third quarter. Bergeski added a 45-yard touchdown reception and the Roughnecks good fortune continued, as they forced a fumble on the next Amarillo drive. The Venom offense began to flourish later on in the quarter, with two touchdowns from Dontrell Moore. Amarillo's defense shined less than five minutes remaining in the third stanza, when defensive back Donta Bright intercepted a Tommy Jones ball that led to another Amarillo offensive touchdown. The Venom led 48-26 going into the final quarter.

Each club scored one touchdown in the fourth quarter. The Venom bled out the clock after recovering an onside kick less than seven minutes to go in regulation. Final score, Amarillo 55, West Texas 33.
