Chicago Slaughter News Release

Hoffman Estates, IL - The Chicago Slaughter (1-3) won their first game of the season, as they defeated the Alaska Wild (2-2) 34-33 at the Sears Centre Arena on Saturday night. QB Randy Hutchinson led the Slaughter, finishing the half 15-31 for 126 yards and two touchdowns, while WR Shatone Powers had five catches for 62 yards. The Slaughter victory ends the team's three game losing streak in which they lost by a cumulative total of eight points.

Hutchinson got things started with a 5-yard touchdown to WR Brandon Beal to put the Slaughter up 7-0 in the first quarter. DL Jon Kowalyshen then blocked a Wild field goal, with DB Chris Goffer returning the kick 5 yards for a touchdown. Kowalyshen also blocked an extra point after an Alaska touchdown later in the first quarter.

Jarrett Payton extended the lead to 20-6 in the 2nd quarter with his two-yard touchdown, his third rushing touchdown on the year. Hutchison-Beal combination hooked up later in the 2nd for another 5-yard touchdown to make the score 27-6. Alaska scored once again to make the score 27-14 going into halftime.

Things got very close in the 4th quarter, as Alaska fought back to take a 33-27 lead in the game. However, Payton picked up his second touchdown of the game, as his 1-yard plunge put the Slaughter up by a point with 31 seconds left in the game. Payton has rushed for four touchdowns and thrown for one TD in his first season with the Slaughter. The Slaughter defense held the Wild offense in check on their last drive to preserve their first win of the year.

"We have a bunch of young guys who need to learn how to work together," said Slaughter Head Coach Steve McMichael. "They came out and they wanted to win. The talent is there, but the timing still needs to be perfected. But they are playing hard and they never give up."

"The decisive play in my mind was when we were 4th and 17," said Hutchinson. "I dropped back and there was only one guy deep enough to get the first down. He made the play and you have to be happy when your guys make you look good. To me, this league is more like outdoor football. It's physical, hard-fought, and everybody wants to win. We owe this one to the fans."

The next home game for the Slaughter will be next Saturday, April 24th, at the Sears Centre Arena against the Kent Predators. Kickoff will be at 7:05. The next road game for the team will be Saturday, April 10th against the Bloomington Extreme.
