State College Spikes News Release
BATAVIA, NY - The State College Spikes took their first lead of the game in the 10th inning Saturday night at Dwyer Stadium, but the Batavia Muckdogs pulled off the 6-5 victory by scoring two runs on a 10th inning error.
The Muckdogs (27-16) led off the 10th inning with back-to-back singles by Colt Sedbrook and Shane Peterson. Both scored on a throwing error by Spikes' pitcher Owen Brolsma after a bunt attempt by Beau Riportella. Those two runs were the only runs the Spikes' (9-33) bullpen allowed in 8 2/3 combined innings pitched.
Batavia jumped ahead early, scoring four runs on two hits in the first inning before recording an out. Spikes' starter Wilson Ortiz was only able to complete the first 1/3 of the first inning after reaching the single-inning pitch count set by the Pirates.
Alan Knotts came in to pitch 4 2/3 innings of early relief for the Spikes. The righty allowed only two hits and no runs while striking out four in his longest outing of the season. Malvin Vasquez followed, pitching two scoreless innings and allowed only one hit in his second appearance this season with the Spikes.
The Spikes' offense came alive in the third inning, scoring three runs and narrowing the Scrappers' lead to one run. Mark Carver led off the inning with an infield single, then came around to score on Ciro Rosero's double to center field. Chase d'Arnaud notched the second run for the Spikes, scoring on a Jeremy Farrell ground out after singling earlier in the inning. Butch Biela added a single to score Rosero.
State College tied up the game in the eighth inning with David Rubinstein scoring on d'Arnaud's sacrifice fly to center field. Rubinstein walked to lead off the inning, advanced on a sacrifice bunt, and then took third on a Batavia throwing error.
The Spikes took their first lead of the game in the tenth inning when Rubinstein scored on a fielding error in left field on a ball hit by Carver. Rubinstein reached base after striking out on a wild pitch. He then stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher.
Batavia walked away with the win after scoring two runs on a throwing error by relief pitcher Brolsma (0-2). Brolsma walked away with the loss for the Spikes, pitching two innings. Adam Reifer (2-1) earned the win for the Muckdogs, after pitching one inning and allowing one run.
The Spikes continue their five-game road trip tomorrow, traveling to Eastwood Field to take on the Mahoning Valley Scrappers (Cleveland Indians). The two teams will play a two-game series, with Sunday's first pitch set for 6:05 p.m. Emilis Guerrero (1-4) will take the mound for the Spikes against the Scrappers' Russell Young (2-2). All the action can be heard on the Spikes Radio Network, 95.3/3WZ, beginning at 5:50 p.m.
The Spikes return home Wednesday night to continue the Sawbuck Series against the Williamsport Crosscutters at 7:05 p.m. Medlar Field at Lubrano Park will host Bark in the Park on Wednesday and Skyy Dogs USA and Rockin' Ray will be on hand as well.
