Palm Beach Cardinals News Release

JUPITER, Fla. - The Palm Beach Cardinals (7 - 5) played in the rain, watched the Fort Myers Miracle get ahead by three, went into extra innings, and deemed Lucas Voit the hero with a walk off win. After going 0 - 4 on the night, the power slugger was due for a hit, and it came at no better time. With two outs and two on, Voit ripped the third pitch of his at bat up the middle to score C.J. McElroy Jr. This win snaps a three game losing streak for the Cardinals.

It looked to be a repeat of the last three games, with Fort Myers (5 - 7) scoring first in the top of the second inning. The Cardinals starting pitcher, Jimmy Reed, started strong in the first inning with two strikeouts, but lost his control the next inning.

Reed faced seven batters in the second, allowing four hits in a row, which led to Fort Myers plating three. Reed collected himself the next inning and looked strong for the rest of his outing. At one point, he retired 16 batters in a row, giving up a single to Michael Quesada in the seventh to end that run.

In the top of the fifth, the bats came alive for the Cardinals, tying the game at three off four hits. The rally started with Palm Beach's first batter, Juan Herrera. He singled to right, setting up Robelys Reyes for a bunt, getting both runners to safety.

McElroy took his third pitch up the middle to shallow center, loading the bases for Mason Katz. Katz mirrored McElroy sending the ball up the middle for a double, giving all the base runners enough time to cross home plate.

For the last four innings, the Miracle was able to muster up two hits, but could make nothing of it. The defense was locked in for each team, forcing the Cardinals to play in extra innings for the first time this season.

To start the first inning of extras, Josh Lucas (1-0) was sent to the mound for Palm Beach. He gave up a single to Quesada, shut down the next two batters, and issued a walk to Niko Goodrum. The Miracle's Marcus Knecht finished the inning hitting the ball back to Lucas, giving him an easy toss to Voit for the third out.

In the bottom of the tenth, Reyes led off flying out to the short stop. McElroy was hit by a pitch, giving Katz another opportunity to make a big play this game. After Katz struck out, the Miracle intentionally walked Bruce Caldwell, putting runners at first and second for Voit. On a 1 - 1 pitch, Voit delivered the game winning RBI, winning it for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals will continue their home series with the Fort Myers Miracle, Tuesday, April 21st with the first pitch slated for 6:35 pm. To purchase tickets, please call (561) 630-1828 or visit RogerDeanStadium.com.
