Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
JUPITER, Fla. (April 21, 2015) - The Palm Beach Cardinals blanked the Fort Myers Miracle, 4-0, on Tuesday night at Roger Dean Stadium in the second of a three game series.
The Cardinals scored on Miracle starter Kohl Stewart in the first inning. After issuing a one-out walk to Mason Katz, Stewart (0-2) retired Bruce Caldwell on a fly out to left, but Luke Voit earned a free pass to put two runners on base. Rowan Wick then hit a bouncing ball to the first baseman Bryan Haar that deflected off his glove and towards second base. Katz rounded third and scored on Wick's RBI single, 1-0.
In the third, Palm Beach added another run. Katz led off with a double then moved to third on a ground out by Caldwell. Voit then rolled a chopper to third base. Logan Wade fielded and threw to first, conceding the run as Katz raced home, 2-0.
After Katz's double, Stewart retired 13 Cardinals in a row before surrendering a hit to Brett Wiley with one out in the seventh. Palm Beach strung together three consecutive singles with Jimmy Bosco and Robelys Reyes following Wiley. Reyes' ground ball up the middle scored Wiley. Stewart exited the game and Brian Gilbert trotted in from the Miracle pen.
Gilbert struck out C.J. McElroy, but Katz lifted a RBI single into left to push the Cardinal lead to 4-0.
The Miracle loaded the bases with two out in the ninth on Palm Beach reliever Kyle Barraclough. Chris Perry was called out of the Cardinal bullpen and retired the final hitter strand three and notch his first save of the season. The Miracle left 11 men on base.
Stewart went 6.1 innings on the mound and gave up four runs on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
Cardinals No. 3 prospect Alex Reyes lasted 4.2 innings as the starter and did not qualify for the win. Reyes allowed just three hits, but walked five with seven punch outs.
Cody Schumacher was awarded the win after two scoreless frames in relief.
The Miracle (5-8) look to avoid the sweep in the series finale with the Cardinals (8-5) on Wednesday night at 6:35 p.m. Fans can follow the action on www.miraclebaseball.com with the "Voice of the Miracle" Brice Zimmerman. The MiracleBaseball.com pregame show begins at 6:15 p.m.
