Palm Beach Cardinals News Release

JUPITER, Fla. - The Palm Beach Cardinals (8 - 5) have won the first series against the Fort Myers Miracle (5 - 8), shutting them out in game two of this three game series by a score of 4 - 0. This marks the fourth shutout on the year for the Cardinals, the most in the Florida State League. In the win, Palm Beach used five pitchers, the most they have used in a game so far this season. Cody Schumacher (1-0), who relieved starting pitcher Alex Reyes after 4.2 innings, got the win for tonight's game.

For the first time since April 16th, the Cardinals offense got to work early and scored first, plating one run in the bottom of the first inning. Miracle's Kohl Stewart (0-2) gave the Cardinals a boost issuing two walks to the second and fourth batter in the lineup. Fifth man, Rowan Wick, hit an unplayable ball to the first baseman, giving Mason Katz enough time to hustle home from second base. That RBI was Wick's ninth on the season.

On the mound, Reyes struggled to find the zone in the 20 batters he faced, getting Manager Oliver Marmol to the mound prior to five complete innings. Reyes still tallied seven strikeouts, but walked five batters, including three in a row in the second. The Cardinals defense helped Reyes, turning two double plays while he was on the mound.

The next pitcher in the game was Schumacher, who went two innings before being relieved by Steven Sabatino. Schumacher allowed just two hits, lowering his ERA to 2.45. Sabatino, who was credited with his first hold of the season, faced two batters, retiring them both on groundouts. In the top of the eighth, Marmol called for Kyle Barraclough to keep the shutout alive.

Barraclough retired the last two batters of the inning and was sent back to the mound in the top of the ninth. His quick approach continued in the beginning, striking out Marcus Knecht and forcing Jason Kanzler to fly out the left field. With one out remaining, Barraclough lost his command, giving up back-to-back singles and issuing a walk. One last call to the bullpen was made for Palm Beach, sending Chris Perry into the game for the final out.

With the bases loaded, Perry redeemed himself after his last outing on Sunday against the Charlotte Stone Crabs, by only throwing two pitches, both being strikes. The last batter for Fort Myers, Alex Swim, grounded to first baseman Luke Voit to end the game. Between all five pitchers, Palm Beach made Fort Myers leave 11 runners on base, with seven of those being in scoring position.

The offense complimented the defense with multiple hits in innings and taking advantage of the two walks in the first. Palm Beach scored another run in the third and got two around in the bottom of the seventh to cushion the eventual win. Four Cardinals collected RBI, including Katz who leads Palm Beach in this category. His two-out RBI single to left moves him into the second spot in the Florida State League, two behind the leader, Michael Conforto of St. Lucie.

The Cardinals will finish their home series against the Fort Myers Miracle on Wednesday, April 22nd . Left-hander Rob Kaminsky will take to the mound with the first pitch scheduled for 6:35 pm. To purchase tickets, please call (561) 630-1828 or visit RogerDeanStadium.com.
