Clearwater Threshers News Release

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Things were not going the Threshers way on Monday.

Clearwater was held to just five hits and charged with four errors in a 12-1 loss at the hands of the Tampa Yankees in the series opener at Bright House Field.

Willians Astudillo collected three of the Threshers five hits, doubling twice. Infielder Angelo Mora pitched the ninth inning for Clearwater, walking two but throwing a scoreless frame in his mound debut.

David Whitehead (1-1) started strong, striking out four batters through two scoreless to open the game.

In the third, Tampa (6-6) managed the game's first run when Claudio Custodio doubled, stole second, and made it home on an errant throw from catcher Andrew Knapp.

After Tampa added a run in the fourth on an Ericson Leonara RBI double, Tampa began to pull away in the fifth inning. Matt Synder knocked in a run with a single, and Tyler Wade crossed on a wild pitch to make it 4-0.

Whitehead was charged with four runs - three earned - on six hits and two walks while striking out six.

Mark Leiter, Jr. took over in the sixth inning. After a leadoff single, he induced a potential double play ball that hit the lip of the grass and took a funky hop on third baseman Mitch Walding for an error. After an Angelo Gumbs RBI double, Custodio rolled a swinging bunt toward third for an infield single to load the bases.

Leiter struck out Mark Payton, but Tyler Wade managed to squirt a grounder through the right side, and Miguel Andujar chopped a slow comebacker to the left of the hill. Leiter lost his footing as he attempted to field, and would be charged with an error.

All told, four runs - one earned - came across for Tampa in the sixth inning, and the Yankees would tack on four more in the following frame.

The Threshers (7-5) broke up the shutout in the bottom of the seventh. Mitch Walding and Devin Lohman each worked a walk against reliever Chad Taylor, and with two outs Andrew Pullin lined a single to left center to plate Walding.

Rookie Davis (1-0) earned the win for Tampa, holding the Threshers scoreless through 5.2 frames. He scattered four hits and struck out seven.

Clearwater will look to bounce back on Dollar Tuesday with Brandon Leibrandt (0-0) on the hill at 7 p.m. The game can be heard live on threshersbaseball.com beginning at 6:45 p.m.
